Remembering the Dawn Princess

We sailed this version of the Dawn Princess to Alaska in 2000 after sailing the original Dawn Princess (Sitmar's Fairwind) in 1989.

I found this information about the current status of the former Dawn Princess.

"On October 7, 2015, Carnival announced that the Dawn Princess would be transferred to its Australian subsidiary P&O Cruises Australia as the Pacific Explorer in May 2017. With the transfer, the Pacific Explorer will become the flagship of the P&O Australia fleet. The Dawn Princess entered drydock on 26 May 2017 in Singapore (Sembawang) for conversion to Pacific Explorer to be released for cruises on 22 June 2017".

I sailed on the Dawn Princess 7 times, she was one of my favorites (loved this class ship) I liked the obstructed cabins right behind the casino for a fantastic central location and a good value for the $$. Spent lots of time in the pizzeria at the top of the atrium :)

She was the first cruise I booked , half a world cruise in 2011. And that got me addicted to cruising. I sailed again on her in Nov last year as my goodbye to her as a Princess ship. And in about 3 weeks I will be sailing on her as Pacific Explorer ! It will be interesting to see the changes, luckily the promenade will still be there. Loved walking laps and staring out to sea .

Here's a Carnival Corporation article about the conversion of the Dawn Princess to the Pacific Explorer.

We also sailed on both. In fact Luigi Moretti, Maitres D' on the Grand, was our waiter on the old Dawn. In those days you had the same waiter for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Best food and service of any Princess cruise by far.

Although it happens less frequently now, I've met several former Sitmar staff on Princess cruises and the all Italian & Portuguese crew were amazing! :D A headwaiter Davide on the Royal Princess prepared gnocchi tableside for our Winemakers Dinner & he began his career at sea on Sitmar.

I'm very thankful to have experienced Sitmar before merging with Princess because Sitmar may be the closest we get to a "luxury" cruise experience. ;)

The only upgrade I have ever gotten in 50+ cruises was on the Dawn. I was on a "family" cruise and had grudgingly booked an inside connecting cabin next to one of my in-laws. The day before we were to cruise, we found we had been "upgraded" to an outside cabin. There are "upgrades" and "upgrades" and I was a little nervous if I had been upgraded to an outside far from the rest of the family and under the disco. Not so. It was away from the family but it was to a cabin with an almost floor to ceiling window. Both of us got upgraded so I think someone came in at the last minute and, unless they got a cheap inside connecting cabin, were not going to book.

Anyway, the "sill" to the window was wide enough for me to sit in and look out. I could sit in front of the window warm, in my bunny slippers, with a view as good as a balcony.

One night, I had taken my shower and my husband went to use the shower. Still being daylight, I get into the window behind the closed curtain as he could possibly come out in the "alltogether." in the cabin. He comes out and I am nowhere to be seen. He knows I had my jammies on, he sees my coat there along with cigarettes (even though you could smoke in the cabin, I never did but went to a smoking area in deference to him who did not smoke and whoever else had the cabin the next week)). He was really worried. I come out from behind the curtain and he nearly had a heart attack. And, yes, he was nekkid (lol).

Loved the ship!
