And when he needs a last minute flight, he cuts thru the BS and marches right onto the airplane and chats with the pilot and flight attendants about a good deal on that last open aisle seat in Row 23.

He won't get past security without a boarding pass at most airports.

Duh.. Of course not.

My post was intended to be a sarcastic response to the post above that claimed someone they knew told stories about walking from cruise terminal to cruise terminal on a sailing day inquiring about booking last second and always snagged a bargain.

You don't get past security and into a cruise port terminal either without a boarding pass.

Even if you claim you have a bathroom emergency.

While there still are bargains to be had, they are few and far between. The lines are pretty good at managing inventory: they do not want to sail with any empty cabins - nor do they want many people to be able to get really good last minute deals - word would spread and their pricing models would be tanked if many people did wait to,the last minute.

Unless you live in a port, or within a few hours drive, you may as well forget about the idea. I suspect that a fair number of the stories about great last minute deals fall into the same category of tales about winning at the casino every time, in short: BS.

It wouldn't be my first choice to book last min. but it can be done. Check with the cruise line you're hoping to book with and see what the policy is.

But you can't just stroll along the dock looking for a cruise! In 1717 yes, but not in 2017!

I agree with this.

But just for clarification, the cruise lines are maximizing revenue on berths (beds) not cabins. The number of beds that can be sold is dictated by number of lifeboat seats.

Empty cabins are fine as long as the revenue goal is met with passenger/revenue count.

This also explains why sometimes you see wacky pricing where the 3rd/4th pricing is higher than the passenger 1 & 2 rate.

Actually, you can. Travelers with airline passes are given a security document to get through TSA checks. If there is space available, then they are given a boarding pass at the gate. If not, they are rolled into a list for next flight or just go home.
