DoggyDaddy Posted August 11, 2017 #1 Share Posted August 11, 2017 When HAL goes from Hilo to Honolulu, it leaves Hilo around 6:00 PM. Does the ship ever travel south to the Volcano to view the lava pouring into the sea or go North for a shorter transit? It should be dark around that time and the show could be spectacular. Alberta Quilter Posted August 11, 2017 #2 Share Posted August 11, 2017 If the scenic cruising past the volcano isn't specifically listed in your itinerary, don't count on it. The Captain, on our Hawaii cruise, was asked about it in a Q&A session and he told us that the itinerary maps in the brochure or website were drawn by graphic designers, not by the actual people navigating the ships. The navigators of the ship choose the direction based on time, distance and fuel consumption.
jtl513 Posted August 11, 2017 #3 Share Posted August 11, 2017 Most of the route maps show the ship going north from Hilo, but the Oosterdam 18-day leaving San Diego on Dec 2 shows the ship going around the south end and specifically says "scenic cruising Kilauea volcano" on Dec 8th. idiebabe Posted August 11, 2017 #4 Share Posted August 11, 2017 We saw the Lava Flow of the Kilauea Volcano on Westerdam this past February. The Captain "hung out" there and even turned the Ship around for both sides to see it, etc. We started the viewing coming up to it around Midnight and were there for a little over an hour. We went to Promenade Deck for most of it (great view) and then when the Ship started turning sat and watched it from our Balcony. The CD informed us the next day that we were a 1/2 mile from it (close)! It was amazing!
Rare ski ww Posted August 11, 2017 #5 Share Posted August 11, 2017 Hope we get to see the lava flowing on our cruise. Allan
SilvertoGold Posted August 11, 2017 #6 Share Posted August 11, 2017 Used to be definitely they would do the Volcano scenic cruising; now, not very often. Also, used to do the Napali Coast scenic cruising but the itineraries haven't specified that for ages, that I have noticed. Enjoy your cruise!! dockman Posted August 11, 2017 #7 Share Posted August 11, 2017 Leaving Kauai it is a shame that the ships don't sail along the na pali coastline for at least an hour or so....some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet. Sad to be so close but be denied the chance to see this coastline to please a few beancounters....

We've sailed many Hawaii/South Pacific cruises and only two, several years ago, included the Napali scenic cruising. Wonderful to see dolphins and the gorgeous coast from the water. You can take water tours of the area and they are well worth it.
