Transportation to Rome cruise port

looking for recommendations on the best way to get from our hotel in Rome to the cruise terminal.... train appears to be the most economical but not sure on how difficult it would be to get to train station and then to terminal... appreciate any feedback!

Very commonly discussed question here. Yes, train is cheapest, but you need to be fully mobile, and able to muscle your bags.

 

Otherwise there are many recommendations for private and shared transport, like the wonderful Rome in Limo.

 

Taxi is the most expensive.

Best way does vary. Depends what you consider best.

 

For us it is convenience and comfort so we go with a private vehicle. In our case we use Rome Cabs which is not a taxi service. They provide a driver and a private vehicle. Web site is: http://www.romecabs.com

Prospects are your hotel will be no more than a short taxi hop from one of Rome's stations on the Civi route - Termini, Ostiense, Trastevere, San Pietro.

At the Civi end, the walk from station to port gate was a ten minute waterfront stroll, but the gate has been moved so now it's more like 20 minutes. With luggage, probably a taxi hop is best.From port gate to ship is by free and frequent port shuttlebus.

Don't worry about posts which mention over-crowded trains. Mid-late afternoon trains do get packed with cruisers returning from a port-of-call visit, hard work even without luggage. But you'll be travelling earlier to meet embarkation registration time.

For just two or three people, the train is by far the cheapest at around 10 euros pp - even if you have to add a taxi at each end.

A private transfer is about the same journey time as by train, but you do avoid the faffing around at each end.

Good advice in general, but just be aware that taxis in Civitavecchia are few and far between so you should not expect to get one at the station. However, there are buses which run between the station and the port bus stop whenever there are ships in port and which cost only a couple of euros.

this link will bring you to the port of Civitavecchia's shared shuttle service. They will pick you up at your hotel in Rome and bring you right to your ship. Costs 75 eu per couple. Check the website and see if someone has a shuttle already set up on the date you need your ride, and you can join if they have space (max is 8 people). If none available, you can start your own shuttle and people can join yours. All the details are on the website. I set up 2 rides with just me and my hubby, and we ended up with 8 people for each. I posted it on our roll call, and had no problem filling them. You can also set up a shuttle from the port to FCO, which costs 70eu per couple.

Was hoping someone more knowledgeable like Eurocruiser would respond.

 

Best I can say is no need to pre-book for the regional train (BIRG), and since the tickets are so cheap (about 5 euros) a discount (if there is one) for pre-booking (if it's possible) won't be worth the effort.

 

But you also have the option of the express service (FRECCE). Travel time won't be a lot different, I don't know if you have to pre-book but I'm pretty sure you can pre-book specific seats. Tickets about 16 euros.

 

The Italian train website http://www.trenitalia.com/ isn't as user-friendly as most, but give it a whirl.

We used All Around Italy. Mary took great care of us. Driver to the cruise terminal was professional and on time.

 

We also booked a Vatican tour with them - can't say enough great things about the tour. Our guide was fantastic.

Just got back from our trip and we used the Port of Civitevecchia's shared shuttle service from our Rome hotel directly to our ship (no walking whatsoever) and again from the ship to FCO. We filled both our shares with 8 people (who we didn't know) with no problem. Pick-up at our hotel was right ontime, as was the pick-up on returning to port. Would absolutely use this service again....the price was right and because they are part of the port itself, they drop and pick you up right at the ship (not at the port entrance).
