screwsmcernst Posted October 29, 2017 #1 Share Posted October 29, 2017 We have early seating for our upcoming cruise, but one evening we have an excursion that won't get back until 7 p.m. Can we use select dining that evening, or do we need to plan on eating in the buffet? Plan on the buffet, but ask your Maitre' D if you can change for the one evening. Worst he can do is say no.
Cruise Arizona Posted October 29, 2017 #3 Share Posted October 29, 2017 They will most likely not be able to accommodate you in Select because they have a limited number of seats. Imagine how chaotic it would be if everyone tried this on a couple of nights. However if you are willing to dine late, like after 8:30 they might be able to work you in. The buffet in the evening does have a limited selection, but it can be a nice quiet alternative to the MDR. They have one station with cooked to order proteins, salad bar, pizza and pasta station. Order your beverages, then make a nice salad and go over the the grill station and order your entree. It can be a nice experience. You can also order room service off the MDR menu during dining times.
mackjack9139 Posted October 29, 2017 #4 Share Posted October 29, 2017 You could consider booking a specialty restaurant for later that evening
Rare xxpinksaltxx Posted October 29, 2017 #5 Share Posted October 29, 2017 I don't think they will be able to accommodate in Select. Not just the limited seats, but when dining Select you need to prepay your tips too. The buffet is generally a very relaxed experience. Alot quieter than at lunch. Normally we see families with young children, crew and also the children's programs early in the night. They have alot of different proteins that are grilled fresh to order. Another alternative is to order meals from the main dining room to your stateroom. It is delivered all at once. However, we haven't done this for a few years. Hopefully someone can confirm if this is still possible? Sent from my SM-N950F using Tapatalk

Rare cruisestitch Posted October 29, 2017 #7 Share Posted October 29, 2017 "I don't think they will be able to accommodate in Select. Not just the limited seats, but when dining Select you need to prepay your tips too." This is no longer the case. However, as all have already noted, it isn't the kind of thing you can just walk up and take advantage of. Perhaps there would be space, and your Maitre D is the one to organize that for you. But there are so many other alternatives (buffet, room service, specialties) that the issue may be moot.
Rare chemmo Posted October 29, 2017 #8 Share Posted October 29, 2017 Talk to your M'D and explain the situation and I am sure he will try to accommodate you for one night although he may suggest a later time (8.30 rather than 7.30 which tends to be a peak time). Their role is to enhance your cruise experience not to limit your choices. If he knows that Select is likely to be busy he may also suggest you arrive to late seating and he will sort you. There are always some empty/part tables.... If your M'D isn't accommodating then I would go for the buffet option....after a long excursion day the last thing you want to do go to an extra cost (long) dinner....much better savoured on a sea day!
