No more major television stations

Surely they were removed for copyright. The vast majority of bars pay a fee for broadcasting sporting events. There came a time when it was not convenient for the shipping companies to pay for this right. Maybe for a big event like the Superbowl they will transmit it in the casinos because bets are another part of the business.

Saw some pictures from the Vista's sail away yesterday and the Pats/Jags game was on the big screen so they seem to be able to show the games.

The only thing I could find on John Heald's FB page were posts by people saying that the playoff games were being shown. I think that during the regular season, there are no guarantees that specific games will be shown. You can't expect that when you travel anywhere. But they do seem to make every effort to show the major, nationally/internationally televised events.

We just got off the Breeze. We had 3 CNN channels, TBS, TCM, Cartoon Network, some complimentary movie channel, Ocean View, and the cruise ship safety channel. The movie channel showed mostly kids cartoon movies. I thought they could’ve had a few more.

  • 3 weeks later...

I just got back from the Sunshine and the only news was HLN and CNN in Spanish. I am a news person and not having any for the week was awful. They did have two channels of cartoon and one movie channel. Also, at night we like to relax and just watch a show if there is nothing going at night that we want to go to. Sometimes a day of sun and a good meal you just want to chill in your room. I asked them and they said they have had a 50 , 50 response to it. I am going to check out other cruise lines. Paying more with less services. Also, I noticed unless you want to do trivia and bingo during the day there were many cut backs. I have sailed Carnival about 14 times and it's time now for a change, too bad because I used to like it.

You won't find network channels on Royal, either.

Take a look at your cable or satellite bill and see how high that cost is. Keep in mind, Carnival and other cruise lines have to pay a retransmission fee for every channel, on every TV, on every ship. It's a huge expensive - they're not just picking these channels up on an antenna...

What a shame. Would like to see things they added to make our vacation much more positive instead of cutbacks.
That's why we're seeing a lot of unbundling of pricing, i.e., surcharges for things that used to be included. That way, we can now all enjoy a lower base price, and then add on the specific things that make our vacation much more positive, rather than paying a higher base price and only getting some of the things we actually care about. Who knows? Maybe one day it'll be more practical to stream the broadcast networks, so you can add that back into your vacation at your own expense, while those of us who don't care about broadcast television networks enjoy a fare lower than it would have been had the skyrocketing retransmission fees for broadcast networks been passed along to us all in the cruise fare.
