No more major television stations

News junkie here.... I too have my favorite news sources and like to know what is going on at home. Since I have other reasons that require getting an internet package' date=' I check in on my preferred large news sites as well as our local home news at least once a day. It was nice to have local local TV stations with regular broadcast in the morning or dinner while getting around or even if fitting in an afternoon nap. I will miss it but it's not a deal breaker. As long as you have a sufficient internet package, and a decent home TV service, you can watch many sports channels and more, courtesy of your home TV service. ESPNs, Fox Sports, NBC.

 

Or while on a cruise, perhaps there are still trial packages you can get for a week and then cancel. Worst case subscribe to one for a month and cancel.

I have three booked right now and for the first time I think I'll also have to get an internet package in order to deal with my news addiction.

 

The more I let this simmer, I may have booked my last CCL cruise for a bit. I love the casino experience and the staff but let's face it there have been a lot of cutbacks since I started cruising CCL. Even though my three booked cruises are "free" I'm still paying quite a bit in taxes and casino losses and think it is ridiculous that I can't go back and chill in my cabin or watch a game if I bet on it or something. This was really disturbing news to me for some reason.

 

Perhaps Carnival wants gamblers who gamble more and watch TV less? Everybody pays the same taxes and if not in the casino, perhaps shopping in the stores or actually paying for their drinks?

Have you been able to stream video on a cruise? I haven't. The best I've done is it plays for a few seconds then freezes and you only have audio. Sometimes you can't even get that. That's with premium internet.

Unless they charge for everything by consumption (which would be a nightmare and is impossible in 2018 as I see it) people are going to be "subsidizing" included services and amenities that aren't used. Childless people "subsidize" camp carnival. People who don't do trivia "subsidize" the trivia. Non-smokers "subsidize" the smoking sections. People who don't workout "subsidize" the gym. I "subsidize" the toilet paper because I am always so constipated the first few days when I travel that there's no way I get my money worth. Poor use or poor understanding of the term when used this way.

No problem for me as I bring my tablet loaded with television shows that I need to catch up on. Did this for the first time in November and loved it!! I know several people that will download movies to watch the whole cruise.

The internet is NOT sufficient to stream I have sling box so essentially I am watching my Directv from home. However the best speed you will get is 1-2 M<b, about half the speed of your cell phone. Instead of everyone post on here and preaching to the choir, write Carnival Guest Services and complain

Why? To subsidize is to pay part of the cost of. It has nothing to do with quantity used. If there are no free TV channels, nobody subsidizes them. If there are, everyone does. People who utilize Pay Per View, pay their way.Same with people who purchase Internet packages.

I agree. The only way this type of argument holds merit is if everything is charged a la carte. People will always be paying for services they don't use. Until something is taken away that someone uses, they will never see a problem with it. That's short sighted at best. After reading these boards, I think everything being a la carte may not be a bad idea. I don't want to subsidize child care, the gym, trivia, smoking sections, waterworks, the buffet, the main dining room in the evening or other services I don't use. In reality, that's not feasible. People need to realize that the fact that they don't use something doesn't mean it's not important to others. In other words, people need to get over themselves & realize everything isn't about them & their greedy, selfish selves.

 

FWIW, I wouldn't be happy to miss important sports broadcasts, but couldn't care less about the networks otherwise. That doesn't mean I can't see why some people would miss the scheduled network broadcasts. If it's important to some, I'm okay with paying a stipend for the networks.

The new system promises to be fast enough to retain crew who have a shown a propensity join the competition for faster internet.

In another big move, Carnival is cutting the cord on showing the ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX networks on in-stateroom TVs. The TVs will still show channels like CNN, TBS, TNT, and the Discovery channel in addition to the ship channels like the lido deck camera and cruise tracking. However, the overall size of the TV guide will be significantly reduced

Oh my...how will I survive not knowing what the news or weather will be like in Denver while cruising in the Caribbean? Guess I'll have to spend more time out of my cabin.
