No more major television stations

Retransmission fees aren't cheap - Carnival was likely paying each local TV station a fee for each TV on each ship. That's just like Comcast/DirectTV/AT&T etc do for cable/satellite service on land. TV stations are losing viewers, so they're getting whatever the can from these fees

That is exactly the problem . I'm sure it gets expensive for every tv on every ship weather the room is booked or not.

This was a really, really big deal to a lot of people on the Liberty Christmas cruise. We boarded on the 24th, which was a Sunday. There were no football games on at all, even in the Sports Bar. They were told that there will be Monday night football, since that was on ESPN. The only stations they could watch games on were ESPN and FS1. If playoff games aren't on those channels, I don't know if they will be showing them. So you will only get the playoff game that is playing on ESPN.

Don't go ruining the day for the bashers...this is one of a long, long, long, long list of cutbacks. Cruisers have to bring their own food now and also need to chip in for stops for fuel.

Well put, still chuckling!!

I suspect Carnival was paying a considerable amount due to the FCC rules that prevent local networks from being rebroadcast outside of their local market.
Isn't the rule that local channels cannot be rebroadcast into markets (specifically) served by other affiliates of the network? The distinction is important because of the "unserved household" provision; presumably that's the provision that supports local stations aboard cruise ships (since, at sea, there is no local network affiliate). As such, I wouldn't expect any special surcharge - it would just be the standard retransmission fee.

You are correct that is a rule, but there is also rules dealing with advertising,The EAS(emergancy alert system), Nelson rating encoding, close captioning as well as many many others. For example, when your local affiliate switches to the national feed in primetime the national feed will have their own advertising that local affiliates will play their own advertising and PSA's on top of these national ads. They are only allowed to do this us within their local markets.

An argument could be made that since non the the carnival ships are flagged in the US the FCC rules don't apply, but that could open an another set of can worms since your are now rebroadcasting internationally. I don't claim to be an expert at broadcast regulations, I'm an engineer not an lawyer!!

So, no Superbowl, March Madness, NBA playoffs, World Series etc... This stinks-- and not much of a "Sports" Bar if they can't show games like these.

I would suspect they would adjust these areas to be more friendly to sports enthusiasts (i.e. multiple tv's). I've actually never visited one since I'm not a sports nut. Maybe someone with more knowledge can weigh in?

Yes, they will show Super Bowl. Don't believe false rumors unless you read them here.

I can't believe they would do this but to be honest, for all intents and purposes, it seemed to me on our last few cruises we didn't have too many channels most of the time anyways. I know everyone who reads my posts knows my political bend so go ahead and flame away for me saying this but it really annoys me that the only place I'm going to be able to turn for news is CNN. I don't really like Fox News but I can't stand CNN, it's all human interest or stuff to scare people or ripping on the President. I just can't take it. When I'm at home I get my news from the Wall Street Journal print and TV is do Bloomberg, Al Jazeera USA, BBC or Russia Today since you're more likely to get actual news without a slant.

I was on the ship for the Virginia scuttlebutt and all I could see was CNN. By the time we landed back in that states, I was concerned the KKK was going to be there at customs to hear the talking heads on there tell it.

News junkie here.... I too have my favorite news sources and like to know what is going on at home. Since I have other reasons that require getting an internet package, I check in on my preferred large news sites as well as our local home news at least once a day. It was nice to have local local TV stations with regular broadcast in the morning or dinner while getting around or even if fitting in an afternoon nap. I will miss it but it's not a deal breaker. My opinion only.....

We cruise every year during March madness and DH is a big fan.

It is just part of our cruise activity to watch some games either in our cabin or at the sports bar. I just checked the schedule and most of the games through the Elite 8(fans will know what I mean) are shown on TBS,TNT etc and not just CBS so it looks like we'll be able to see some of them.

IF you are not a sports fan you won't care but for some people it is just part of the fun of cruising.

I have three booked right now and for the first time I think I'll also have to get an internet package in order to deal with my news addiction.

The more I let this simmer, I may have booked my last CCL cruise for a bit. I love the casino experience and the staff but let's face it there have been a lot of cutbacks since I started cruising CCL. Even though my three booked cruises are "free" I'm still paying quite a bit in taxes and casino losses and think it is ridiculous that I can't go back and chill in my cabin or watch a game if I bet on it or something. This was really disturbing news to me for some reason.

I understand. I am so glad I am not a giant sports fan....there are several in our group that are so will "interesting" to see how they deal with this. If I didn't need to get an internet package anyway, it would probably have me more agitated.

I blame my life partner! I loved playing them growing up but didn't care to watch unless I bet on them. However, she was one of three girls and was the one who always watched sports with her dad. I met her in grad school and she made me get a TV so she could watch the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Baseball team! As my income has increased, I've had more money to bet on sports and I've become pretty interested in most professional sports. Still don't watch too much college because I think they should pay the kids...don't even get me started on that topic!
