Though "expensive" for many out-of-towners, Scoma's is a taste of old SF as is the Buena Vista bar (Irish Coffee) and Red's Java House.

One really great thing about SF is that there are so many great restaurants (e.g., Slanted Door, Foreign Cinema, Perbacco, etc) in such a small area. Thus, if a place is really bad, it's usually gone within 6 months to a year of opening.
