Special needs meals - have you had success in getting food altered

My wife has also kicked cancer a few times and has come out of it lactose intolerant and allergic to shellfish. Each night when we are seated in the MDR, we ask for the headwaiter. If we have TD, they know to get him. We get his name the first night so we can ask for him if AD. We always try to eat in the same MDR, so we get the same Head Waiter.

He will bring the next night's menu so he and my wife can review it. He records her picks to give our waiter the next night. He will suggest off the menu options as well as modifications to help her.

The do a GREAT job.

Same here! DW has a shellfish allergy and she orders one day ahead of time with the head waiter. I get to see the following day's menu.

I had to do the Chef's Table by myself while she visited a specialty restaurant

Princess is fabulous with food allergies and in tolerances! DH has a wide assortment of allergies and every time we cruise the head waiter in our assigned dining room helps DH plan his meals in advance. I really can not say enough about how easy it is and how accommodating they are.

I'm frankly shocked to hear the head waiter didn't care. I agree the AND is important as well. Advance notice, and make them aware at the time. Cruised with a friend with celiacs and they couldn't have been more responsive. She preordered for the following evening each night as well. She even was escorted through the buffet when we breakfasted and lunched there by the head chef on duty each time. They were truly awesome.

My DW also has a severe shellfish and a soy allergy. We record her allergies on her cruise personalizer and dine at TD. The head waiter has always been looker for her and knew her allergies. They would also have special meals made for her for lunch in Horizon Court. At times I wish I were eating what she had rather that what was on the menu.

We have always been so impressed with all the head waiters in how caring they have been with her diet needs, (44 cruises to date).

Thanks for the comments. It seems to be a common theme that cruisers with some special needs are well taken care of (for the most part).

I sent an email off to the email dietaryrequest@princesscruises.com and we received a response in 2 days (over the weekend). It was not a canned email response, which was encouraging.

Message text was as follows:

Thank you for contacting us with notification of your request for pureed meals. Please take a moment to review the following information.

Once onboard, it is very important that you contact the Maitre d’ Hotel to discuss your special dietary needs and any special preparation of your meals. It will be at your discretion to order meals allowable.

Your request for pureed meals can be accommodated in the main dining rooms only. The buffet may offer some pureed food items but this is not guaranteed.

On selected port days when the main dining rooms are closed for lunch, every effort will be made to accommodate your needs in the buffet restaurant. We ask that you speak with the Maitre d’ Hotel the evening prior to discuss your meal requirements and any special preparation for the following day. When arriving at the buffet, please request to speak to a Supervisor, who will coordinate any special preparations directly with the chef.

I've seen headwaiters who were terrific at accommodating special dietary needs of our tablemates. It's just that since DH has started his special diet, we haven't had the same attentiveness. I think the problem is that DH can usually order things off the menu without a problem, and the headwaiters don't show as much interest after a couple of nights of not having to arrange special orders for him. And then he hasn't insisted either, sort of giving up on having anything cooked specially for him.

Geotraveler Tell him to ask for particular foods on the first couple nights, not to be a pain, but to insure more attention from the MD or HW. Not Mad Dog or Hot Water.

It is your cruise and he should be able to receive the items that meet his needs. Princess handles special needs with care as they want you to continue to travel on their ships for a long time. Dead and sick folks don’t spend much money. ☠️

I am glad you emailed them. Everyone mentioned the dining room which is easy but lunch and the buffet is another story.

Looks like you will have a good cruise!

Just an update to this string. I was well taken care of during the cruise. Each meal I was able to get food that I was able to eat, and they were glad to make sure I had great meals (although they were blended). The Head Waiter for the section we were eating at also suggested other foods that I was able to eat. Had lobster and Crab, and was in seafood heaven!
