Caribbean cruises in July

In 14 years of Caribbean cruising in summer we have been impacted ONCE. Had to switch to Royal since Princess no longer does much in the summer there but we still go. The one impact was last September when first cruise diverted to a western itinerary and stayed out 3 days longer due to Port Everglades closure. Second cruise shortened to 4 days, Nassau only (instead of western). People did miss that cruise due to flight issues, but they were also offered 100% back if they didn't cruise. Locals who didn't have power at home stayed on for $400 for suites. We got 50% back as onboard credit and 50% back as a future credit. Other than not going anywhere we had planned on the right day it was a great two weeks.

Thanks for that information. Makes me feel more confident to book.

Caribbean Princess is sailing out of Port Everglades in July 2019.

We have sailed both Princess and RCCL and to be honest, don't really see much difference between the lines, apart from extra 'adventure' facilities which we don't use. So if the price is right, and fits our schedule...we book either line.

Have cruised Caribbean at Easter and May, but never in July or August.

Considering it for next year.... Is it too close to hurricane season ?

What is weather usually like at this time of year ?

Many thanks.

July should not bother you with hurricanes but it will be very hot and humid with good chances of showers and thunderstorms.

look up the history of hurricanes in your area. it wont be as scary as you think. probably.

1st cruise i ever took was the 1st ship back to bermuda after that one in 2016. we didnt even know if we would be going until last minute but got there and virtually no sign they were in a hurricane.

wiki said this about the event:October 13, 2016 – The eye of Category 3 Hurricane Nicole passes over the islands, though the exact center remains just offshore. Gusts as high as 136 mph (219 km/h) blow down trees and power lines, which cuts power to nearly 90% of the territory's electric customers.[215][216] Dozens of boats are damaged or destroyed, and entire fields of crops are lost, although property damage is less severe than anticipated.[217][218][219] The hurricane drops 6.77 in (172 mm) of rain, becoming one of the wettest recorded storms to impact Bermuda

Agree with above.

It's not just hurricanes ... tropical storms are also an issue.

Still huffing and puffing, as on the cautious side. Sounds as if we'd be fine though. There's nowhere we definitely have to visit as we've done all the ports previously. Quite like sea days. ...Think I may have convinced myself"

If there is a hurricane in the area, you could have a week of rough seas, and rainy weather.

Most princess ships are crazy crowded inside when it's raining outside on a sea day.

It will also be super hot. I remember being in St. Thomas, and it was too hot to stand -- wearing sneakers.

On the other hand, I was at Princess Cay for Canada Day. I think the entire ship was in the water at the beach.

We usually spend the summers in Palm Springs or Phoenix, so hopefully will manage heat and humidity. Will remember to pack some cheap, throw away plastic macs. (Can't remember what they are called nowadays...) Oh.. disposable ponchos, that's it! and remember beach shoes.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

If there is a hurricane in the area the itinerary will be changed to avoid it. It could end up being a week of smooth seas and sunny skies, just not the original itinerary.

  • 3 weeks later...

We have lived in Florida for 25 years and am pretty knowledgeable about hurricanes. The really big storms for the most part happen in August and September, there is always a chance of a tropical storm in June or July which for the most part are rainmakers. We are booked on the Caribbean Princess on June 9. Down through the years we have booked 4 cruises in September and have lucked out, the rates were too good to pass up.
