Best deal going even if you only cruise infrequently. I am waiting for them to put an annual cap on it as we are making out like bandits this year, over $2,000.

Ssshhh, Kirk! Lol. Don't give Carnival Corp any ideas about modifying the shareholder privileges we all love. I've had my shares for years, and couldn't even guess how many times I've enjoyed the benefit. Love those dividends too!

Agree! Best investment I ever made. Great dividends, stock has doubled in last 5-6 years and tons of OBC earned!

If you're cruising that frequently, I'm sure they're making plenty of money on you, even with the OBC :D. But yes, it's an excellent deal. Wish that Royal Caribbean's program was as easy to use. I've never been able to use it there due to their restrictions.

BTW. is the shareholder OBC really non-refundable? I have free service charges on my upcoming cruise and $250 shareholder OBC (as well as more from my TA and I know I won't spend all of that). I am planning to spend the $250 but wondering if they really differentiate refundable and non-refundable OBC. I know they do on Celebrity and Royal.

They do separate it. I found out the hard way last cruise - lost about $60 by using some of my OBC in the casino!

Sometimes they do not catch it, as a cruise 6 months ago I actually got a few dollars in cash back. Go figure.

Can you explain that? Can you use the non-refundable OBC in the casino? Or did you think you were using it but actually used refundable or ended up getting charged to your card?

My thoughts on "casino"-able/non-"casino"-able, refundable/non-refundable, usable-for-gratuities/not-

useable-for-gratuties SOBC:

Carnival's intent is clearly laid out in the "Shareholder's Benefit" PDF available at

http://www.carnivalcorp.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=140690&p=irol-sharebenefit:

non-"casino", non-"gratuities", non-refundable.

Trying to thwart that intent is exactly as dishonorable as smuggling booze aboard.

I think that equating using the SOBC for service charges with smuggling liquor onboard is really going overboard. If their system is using the OBC for them, am I supposed to waste money to use OBC that's already been spent?

We had alot of OBC and our hotel service charge was paid for by HAL, so we had more OBC than we normally do. We had charged about $100 in the casino to the cabin. The last evening I checked our account bill and noticed that we still had a small credit left - no biggie. However the next morning we got a new bill that showed we owed $60, with a statement charge of "promotional credit unused".

On our previous cruise we did things the same way but did not get a similar charge.

I did not complain, as HAL likely was correct. I was not trying to cheat the system, as we truely gambled (and lost) the $100 we charged to the cabin, plus I did not know if all the OBC (from different sources) was refundable or not (on one cruise we actually got a credit card credit). Plus, we had monies from cancelled port charges and a cancelled excursion credited to our account, to confuse the matter further.

My point in my previous post was to alert that HAL seems to handle these OBC differently by ship (like MANY other things). We just charge what we normally would spend and let HAL figure it out.

...and you keep the excess if the grocery checker gives you too much change?
