Holiday is falling apart

Recommended Posts

Was all set to go on our flight this morning to NewYork to spend a few days this side of our cruise down to the Bahamas and back.

As my son has spinabifida and wheelchair bound he wears a catheter leg bag for the duration of the flight, all this went as usual this morning for our long journey to Dublin airport, on arrival we decided to go drain his bag pre-flight only to discover it was full of blood and when removed the blood continued at quite a rate. An ambulance was called and just prior I ran over to the airline desk and informed them of the situation which they offer additional flight if we missed ours.

Anyway we are currently in the hospital on our 6 hour with another 2 before the doctor is out of theatre to see him so still no further forward as to the cause. In the meantime I just received an email from ebookers who we booked the flights and hotels through to say our flights there and back have been cancelled. The hotel is non-refundable so lost out there too and if the doctors say he isn’t fit to flight we lose out on our cruise too.

You read about this but never believe it will happen to you.

Oh no! I'm so sorry that this happened to your son. I hope he is OK--that is the most important thing--but I also hope that the doctors say he can travel and that you will be able to go on our cruise holiday.

Situations like this are why we always purchase travel insurance. It is worth the peace of mind to not have to worry about losing thousands of dollars in case we are not able to go on a booked holiday due to a medical situation with myself, my husband or our kids. My mother is elderly and a bit frail, so she is also a concern.

Fingers crossed that everything works out and you are able to go! Sending healing thoughts!

So sorry to hear this. Hope he is better soon and you can resume your holiday plans.

Thanks for all your kind words, I hope he’s fine too. They keep putting back to time when the specialist is to see him so currently in limbo. Just touched base with the travel insurance this morning when it all kicked off but as we still know nothing more there’s no real point contacting them until we know what’s happening.

If you used a credit card that collects travel points, it might be worth checking to see if you are covered for medical emergencies as well, if you’re travel insurance comes up short. We have a credit card that gives us travel points and it covers medical for card holder plus immediate family. We almost had to use it when one of our family members became ill a couple of days prior to our cruise a couple of years ago. Thankfully, things resolved but I understand how stressful it can be. Best of luck to your family. I wish you and your son well.

Am I too early to get in contact with Royal Caribbean since we don’t cruise until Friday?

Call Royal Caribbean as soon as you can. We have always had success with there customer service after we are transferred to the correct department to handle my situation. If you reach the call center in Guatemala, please ask them to transfer you up the chain.

Hopefully you have some form of travel insurance.

Good luck, and please let us all know how you son does as well as your response from Royal Caribbean.

SInce you have time to post on an internet forum, CALL RCCL NOW.

Hope all works out well for you.

I’ve time because no one is coming near us here, 8 hours and still don’t know what’s wrong or sorted or even when we can leave never mind fly.

I don’t want to leave his side until I know more, plus the noise in A&E would make it impossible to hold a conversation with anyone.

I'm not sure why you'd contact Royal, there isn't anything they could do. Unless I'm missing something?

If the doctors come back and say the trip is a no go, then yes you'd want to call and cancel. You'll at least get the port fees & taxes returned. The rest is up to your insurance.

Hopefully the doctors give good news.

So sorry to read about all that your son, you and your family are going through. I hope that whatever is going on with your son turns out to be minor and easily rectified. Best of luck to all of you!

I personally would wait until you know whether you are going or not before calling RCCL, the last thing you need is them canceling your cruise and you’re still able to go. You should definitely call your insurance company though, since you already have a claim for your lost flights. You should probably also call the hotel to let them know that you may still arrive later in the week.

Thinking of you and your son in this horrible situation. The most important thing is the health of your son-you can cruise another time. I know that's really difficult to accept at this point as you'll have been so excited for your holiday but health is the most important thing.

We were in exactly the same situation 5 years ago-cruise all booked then the week before I had a heart attack. Absolutely devastating at the time and making that call to cancel was so hard. But we have cruised since, after my health was sorted, and got all our money back through insurance

Take care and I hope things get better quickly x

I only wish all the people on these boards who post about trivial complaints could be made to read this

I truly hope you have a good and speedy outcome and if not that you are able to rearrange something else not too long after

I wish the little chap a speedy recovery
