Cruisinmsk Posted July 1, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 1, 2018 Curious as most ships sailaway late afternoon/early evening? Just curious the reasoning behind that.
Towel Critter Posted July 1, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 1, 2018 This is just a guess on my part, but I assume it is because of the longer flights required. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. :-)
christyran1228 Posted July 1, 2018 #3 Share Posted July 1, 2018 Possibly flights ... also give you time to explore the port. At least that's what we did, because we had an early flight at the end of the cruise that was the only time we got to explore San Juan. :)

Towel Critter Posted July 1, 2018 #5 Share Posted July 1, 2018 St Thomas being a short distance from San Juan. Ah! Makes sense. Is St Thomas always the first stop?
Sixtytwo Posted July 1, 2018 #6 Share Posted July 1, 2018 I agree, I suspect it is because the St. whatevers are only a short cruise from San Juan that leaving later is the best option.
StillPooh Posted July 1, 2018 #7 Share Posted July 1, 2018 I think it’s to give passengers flying in the same day plenty of time to arrive. Although on our Caribbean Princess cruise, we arrived in the early afternoon for a 9 pm departure, that ended up being closer to midnight due to engine problems. NOT an auspicious beginning! Rare MeganGC1983 Posted July 1, 2018 #8 Share Posted July 1, 2018 It’s considered at port day so it is treated as such. You have passengers that embark from Barbados that are not debarking in San Juan. It’s one of their full port days. winddawn Posted July 1, 2018 #12 Share Posted July 1, 2018 Funny responses! The late departure is because of the time it takes to reach San Juan by air from the mainland U.S.

Garth2 Posted July 2, 2018 #15 Share Posted July 2, 2018 I agree with all of the above reasons, and it may also be to entice passengers to visit the casino which is walking distance from the ship.
DukeASUGirl Posted July 2, 2018 #16 Share Posted July 2, 2018 St. Thomas is super close, plus they do this to allow people to explore San Juan.
Homosassa Posted July 2, 2018 #17 Share Posted July 2, 2018 I wonder how much it has to do with the narrow ship channel into the port of San Juan. The channel is used for both cargo and cruise ships. I have only seen one ship at a time in the channel and I imagine arrivals and departures are tightly scheduled with cruise ships either departing by mid afternoon or mid evening. jsglow Posted July 2, 2018 #18 Share Posted July 2, 2018 All the answers are correct. And Carnival isn't the only cruise line that does that. BTW, leaving past the softly illuminated fort is perhaps my favorite departure. I never tire being on the rail for that.
