ashton57 Posted July 11, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 11, 2018 We will be sailing on the Horizon later this year with our 20yr old son. Stops in San Juan, Grand Turk, St Maarten and St Kitts. Was curious if the drinking age is 18 at these ports will he also be able to order a drink on the ship when docked at these locations? What about when we are out to sea? Does the drinking age go back to 21? Any info is appreciated.
Ducman Posted July 11, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 11, 2018 He will not be able to drink on the ship. Off the ship, its up to the country.

Lottacruises Posted July 11, 2018 #4 Share Posted July 11, 2018 Carnival doesn't allow him to drink in ports either, the drinking age for all passengers for the cruise duration follows US law. However, they rarely find out when underage passengers partake in countries where rhey are legally allowed to do so.

And if there are, even if the legal age for consuming alcohol on any of the islands is 18, that still wouldn't make any difference on the ship. coevan Posted July 11, 2018 #6 Share Posted July 11, 2018 yes, most to all of the bars are open at port, sometimes we stay aboard. The drinking age on the ship is 21, no exceptions. Most islands do not have a drinking age, if you can reach the bar stool and have cash, you can drink. At 14 my son was offered a beer in Mexico. Rare Jamman54 Posted July 11, 2018 #9 Share Posted July 11, 2018 Is there a link to this rule?We never seen this rule with any of 8 lines including Carnival. There is no such rule. Once off the ship you abide by the rules of the host country. Once back on the ship you abide by Carnivals rules.

Just don't try and get a drink on the ship1 Karen

DukeASUGirl Posted July 12, 2018 #15 Share Posted July 12, 2018 Carnival has absolutely no standing on what the country's laws are in port. He can drink at a bar in port, just not on the ship.
RWolver672 Posted July 12, 2018 #16 Share Posted July 12, 2018 Is there a link to this rule?We never seen this rule with any of 8 lines including Carnival. Drinking Alcohol On Board The minimum age for the purchase and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages in the bars, lounges and gift shops is 21 years of age. In the event that Bar/Restaurant/Gift Shop Staff are in question that the guest is less than 21 years old, they shall request picture identification, prior to serving the drink or selling the bottle of liquor. That is the policy for onboard the ship. Off of the ship, Carnival has no say in how old you have to be. And their policy holds true even when the ship is in port, no matter what the policy is at the port.

Lottacruises Posted July 12, 2018 #18 Share Posted July 12, 2018 I think it may have used to have been in the cruise contract, but I couldn't find it any where so maybe not. The closest I saw was that an underage couldn't drink on carnival's private islands, even if they were in a country that it would be legal otherwise. The private islands are considered an extension of the ship, so therefore the ship's rules are what you follow.
