Guitar playing spots on board

I will express the minority opinion that I think it’s a lovely idea for him to bring his guitar. My husband and I would happily keep him company if he doesn’t mind an audience.

I suppose as long as he doesn't also put out a tin cup it's OK with me.

Turn the worthless ship shopping areas into a sound-proof recreation room, for passengers who like to make noise.

LOL

Good idea :)

As I WISH .. I believe you that you never complain. :) Hats off to you

Is it just me or are the post attributions when replying all screwed up on this thread?

That happened to me on another thread. A post suddenly has my name attached and people reply to me.

It happens when someone includes a prior post but missing the quote brackets, before they start their own follow-up post. Then that mish-mash get quoted in a following post. This time is is end-point user error.

..............
- Watch out for both of these, when you include a post response if you are going to include the prior post.

People are ridiculous. He’s not more bothersome than people taking up Lido space to play cards, chair hogs, smokers, people taking 70 zillion pictures, kids on phones, elevator people who are only going one floor, whatever. No one has paid for a private ship. Cruising means you get to deal with other humans who might make noise, be smelly, take up a space you’d like, or just generally interact with you in a way you might find imperfect. If he likes to play, he should bring his guitar and play. If someone takes issue, they can move OR ask him to. No big deal. Cruising with 1000 other people means understanding that 500 of them might be doing something annoying.

Just a comment on your annoyance with people who take the elevator for just one floor.

I see by your photo that you are young. My husband is elderly and unsteady on his feet. Using the stairs on a moving ship is dangerous for him. We take the elevator even if we are just going one floor.

There are others who may be younger but who suffer from COPD and cannot do stairs. I have a cruising friend whose husband suffers chronic pain from an old injury and stair climbing is not an option for him.

I could go on and list many ailments that prevent a person from doing stairs. As you age you may have to join the “one floor elevator “ club and no longer include them in your list of annoyances.

I must admit that if I had been cruising when I was young I probably would have been annoyed as well. Age is a great teacher.

There are “ nude cruises “ real naked people walking around a ship.

Some guy playing an acoustic guitar doesn’t sound that bad.[emoji6]

True, but at least I know ahead of time that I will be cruising with naked people. No surprises there.

Don't ask the old folks on this board for their "opinion".

Honestly, age doesn't have anything to do with this... and I think that's a little offensive (I don't mean to be rude by saying this). I think these boards represent a good snapshot of the HAL guest... and candidly, the posters here offer some real expert opinions. The OP might not want to hear the responses, but as I read them (as a healthy 53 year old) I think they are directionaly accurate. Most people would be bothered by this.

I can't imagine a non-employee entertainer setting up shop in a fine hotel, restaurant, retail store, or any other public indoor venue without some concern from guests or ownership. For goodness sake, a HAL ship - no matter what you might think of them - is hardly a subway station welcoming street performers.

Bring the guitar and play it on the sidewalk in port... and let's not open a can of worms where we will start to see jugglers, fire breathers, evangelists with megaphones, or mimes cluttering the passageways of our beloved ships. There is enough guest-provided entertainment watching people overfill their plates at the buffet!

That all being said, I hope the OP and her husband have a wonderful cruise!

Actually, I don’t find any of those things annoying at all! I was listing gripes I had seen on this board before. Whoever wants to take an elevator for however many floors they want is fine by me. That’s an example I used specifically because people need to use the elevator for one floor and those that are annoyed by it often don’t need the elevator at all, just prefer it!

Also, my photo is from 12 years ago! In my old age, I can’t figure out how to change it.

That's where "strategic guitar placement" becomes very important

Bring the guitar! Forget the detractors. Have fun on your cruise, and if it includes lugging a guitar, do it!

Interesting. Yes, if he wants to bring it and not play it onboard, that does remain a valid choice. But people objecting to free-range musical performers onboard are not "detractors". Just for the record, they are people expressing authentic opinions.

Hotel, restaurants, retail store etc. are not public places. They are private company's that, yes, could toss you out if you were causing a disturbance for other customers. HAL is a private company ( I know the stock is publicly traded ) can ask or force a person off the ship if they become a nuisance to other on the ship.

I know play an acoustic guitar softly can be or should be fairly innocuous but if you don't want to listen to it, it can become exasperating (as does the bluetooth speakers ). The two resolution options mentioned of asking the musician to be quiet or having to vacate the area myself are poor choices. One involves a confrontation with the musician and the other interferes with my quiet enjoyment of the ship. However, if he were to play in the casino, with all the bells and dings and other noises, he would probably go unnoticed.

There are cruises where you are welcomed to bring what ever instrument you like. Many of my early HAL cruises where Blues Cruises. Full ship charters of nothing but blues music. They were/are quite fun. There are cruises out there for just about any interest. Even the nude as someone mentioned.

And in the end... We don't all like the same genre of music. When I hear someone strumming 'Stairway to Heaven' my mind takes me to John Belushi in the movie 'Animal House'. He had an interest approach to a similar problem.

If this were about someone playing a kazoo, I have a feeling the tune would be different from those who say a guitar is A-ok.

I still remember the guy in the dorm room across from me who spent the entire year learning to play one song on his acoustic guitar. And this was an old building with concrete walls and a solid wood door.

Nude cruises are always charters. you must book through the group so one knows in advance of boarding, they have chosen to sail a nude cruise

I'm just going to come right out and say it. Good electric guitar performances have gained alot of traction in main theatre shows lately, we've seen a few in recent months.

More importantly, the crowd is going crazy. I can't wait for the day we see Rock of Ages hits the Main theatres in cruiselines.

As for best playing spots on board for guitar, it'd be center stage on the K-Dam. That's where they should move the BB King review instead of blasting it up the atrium and more people could sit and drink and enjoy the show.

p.s. Ask the cruise director early on and give him an audition for the talent show....
