UKCruiseJeff Posted September 15, 2018 #585 Share Posted September 15, 2018 As nothing else seems to be going on. Some books have been reviewed. The stately antiques of old England Here’s a glorious glimpse into the lives of the lost upper classes, says Ysenda Maxtone Graham https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/review-the-quest-for-queen-mary-by-james-pope-hennessy-edited-by-hugo-vickers-c07fr20ft?shareToken=c97a4d1a4b6b9d7aa9d78ee3d9031b95 The sloshed ‘sacred monsters’ of Soho The vodka-fuelled bad behaviour of a lost era is lovingly recreated, Robbie Millen https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/review-soho-in-the-eighties-by-christopher-howse-z7rmdsjst?shareToken=8359759502c4b3c1db437c275194a31f All the president’s mealy-mouthed men While few in the White House trust Trump, no one is brave enough to stop him, says Justin Webb https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/review-fear-trump-in-the-white-house-by-bob-woodward-8ghp3glqb?shareToken=11a83e7e91422ce83836af042b42c5a1 My struggle to be the apple of Steve Jobs’s eye It’s a wonder that the eldest daughter of the tech mogul survived, says Melanie Reid https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/review-small-fry-a-memoir-by-lisa-brennan-jobs-92t2x6qpf?shareToken=1d612a38f20f7c38f4a1661c0615bd81
Rare jpalbny Posted September 15, 2018 #586 Share Posted September 15, 2018 Did you see this? A big rockslide on Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos! https://www.cntraveler.com/story/landslide-injures-tourists-at-greeces-famous-shipwreck-beach?mbid=nl_091518_Daily&CNDID=24244038&secondary_link=0&spMailingID=14252304&spUserID=MTcyOTc3Mjk1NDM0S0&spJobID=1481194415&spReportId=MTQ4MTE5NDQxNQS2 We took photos of that place on our 2012 visit. Rare mysty Posted September 15, 2018 #587 Share Posted September 15, 2018 Lots of interesting (and a couple of disturbing) reads reviewed in those links J! Thank you! I think the "Soho in the Eighties" by Christopher Howse might be the most entertaining. :) WOW JP! Beautiful beach but it does look like a scary place to be with rocks falling. UKCruiseJeff Posted September 15, 2018 #588 Share Posted September 15, 2018 Hi M, glad you liked the reviews. I have some growing and nagging doubts about the Chsristoper Howse book. You know sometimes you read a travelog in a paper and there are some facts that make you think is is armchair journalism rather than actual first hand experience? In other words rewriting other peoples stuff. A few bits fit that. All rhe anecdotes I have read in the same language elsewhere but of the early decades. Firstly it sounds more like Soho in the ‘60’s and early ‘70’s rather than the ‘80’s and many of the anecdotes I know are from that era. Also if you recall some of my posts some time ago about Muriel Belcher and the Colony some of her greetings are attributed to her successor. Most of his anecdotes are in other books and articles and he wasn’t there for most or many and perhaps none of them. Some of his other books also rely heavily on the rehash of other works. I might be being unfair but it doesn’t ring original to me. Anyway. If you liked the anecdotes on Royalty then The Times did an even better review a while back with some better and different stories. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/review-the-quest-for-queen-mary-by-james-pope-hennessy-edited-by-hugo-vickers-the-hilarious-battiness-of-life-with-the-royals-3x0whpng2
Rare mysty Posted September 15, 2018 #589 Share Posted September 15, 2018 That's a shame J! If you can't trust the provenance of a book it is difficult to conger up the energy to read it. I do enjoy reading about people's foibles. Not to be mean or judgmental. More like these people are human and as such have issues (some of them entertaining ones :) ) as we all do. Unfortunately the last article you linked to requires a subscription to read the whole thing. I do intend to get a subscription. Current calls on our finances to help a needy child means I have to wait for a bit. Please know that your excellent spreadsheet instructions have made the budgeting thing a whole lot easier! :)
UKCruiseJeff Posted September 15, 2018 #590 Share Posted September 15, 2018 ?I think you can enjoy the anecdotes, I think he is just compiling lots of sources and he doesn’t actually claim he was there. The other book ... and he was certainly there! Try this ... hope it works. It has some funny anecdotes. This review was by Max Hastings. Review: The Quest for Queen Mary by James Pope-Hennessy edited by Hugo Vickers — the hilarious battiness of life with the royals. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/review-the-quest-for-queen-mary-by-james-pope-hennessy-edited-by-hugo-vickers-the-hilarious-battiness-of-life-with-the-royals-3x0whpng2?shareToken=58f1896784c2b0313ccd1e0af0cfb6fe

That looks like a great all day breakfast J. Saw this earlier in the week and J’s link reminded me. Apparently there have been several new reviews left on the site from Russian visitors recently. Rare TLCOhio Posted September 16, 2018 #599 Share Posted September 16, 2018 Greetings Coolers! Today's funny....another gem courtesy of Miss S....... Have a great day all! Appreciate this great funny from misty for Sex after eye surgery. Wonderful!!! Have been having challenges with my MacBook Pro laptop. Funky lack of proper performance. Have it in the hands of Apple to get fixed. Hope to get it back in a week or so. Nice and sunny weather in Central Ohio now, but rain coming later tonight and tomorrow as a post-hurricane impact from what has hit and damaged the Carolina so severely. Now exactly two months until we do our sail-away from Athens going to Dubai during a twenty-day sailing. This cruise with Oceania will give us our first sampling of the Holy Lands, Egypt, Jordan/Petra, the Middle East, etc. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio Enjoyed a 14-day, Jan. 20-Feb. 3, 2014, Sydney to Auckland adventure, getting a big sampling for the wonders of "down under” before and after this cruise.
