Live from the Radiance of the Seas August 31, 2018 to Seward to Vancouver

Recommended Posts

Day two on the Radiance was a sea day. The highlight would be the Hubbard Glacier viewing. It started off with a constant light rain, so as the day progressed it was looking a little iffy. Fortunately, the skies cleared and the sun shone brightly as we approached the glacier. The first side to see the glacier would be the port side, and since Sue and Shelby’s Grand Suite was on the 10th floor port side, we agreed to meet in their cabin to see the glacier. Shelby and I drank my C&A Coronas, and the ladies had a bottle of Savingnon Blanc and we snacked on the C&A snacks. The ship approached the glacier to inside a half mile. The glacier had several small calvings. The sound was noticeable, but not quite as dramatic as I was expecting. After about 30 minutes the ship turned 180 degrees to be on the starboard side. Our little party broke up, and K and I went to our cabin to watch the glaciers and to look at it while we departed the fjord. We had only gone about an hour when the rain returned. It was kind of amazing that for the glacier we had perfect weather and before and after rain.

Of course, day 2 was a formal night. We did not take any formal clothing or even semi dressy clothing. So, we pre-booked Chops for dinner. So, we started the evening in Diamond lounge, and a good portion were dressed formal, and several were like me in a long sleeved jazzy shirt. The lounge was much quieter this evening and not as packed. After about 45 minutes we switched lounges and hung out until our 6:30 reservation with Sue and Shelby. The Concierge Lounge was dressed a bit more casually, but still probably a third were dressed in at least a suit or jacket for the men.

Dinner in Chops was very good, although the sides seemed smaller than I remembered them in the past, but they were still good.

After Chops we were again a bit late for the evening’s show with the RCI singers and dancers doing a production called Piano Man. It seemed familiar like we had previously seen the production on another ship? Anyway, it was better than average to me, and since I like Billy Joel and Elton John I was able to get past the bad Barry Manilow music. The theatre was again 100% packed and we again watched it from the back of the theatre standing. That was starting to become old.

After the show, we all went our separate ways, mostly to bed. The next day would be Juneau and we had a full day planned starting with an early morning whale watching excursion on our own.

Did you get much use out of it.

OK here are some of the photos from close to the beginning.

First picture is my breakfast at Alexis Baking Company in Napa.  It was so good that I had to figure out how to make Lemon Ricotta Pancakes when we got home.  They were yummy and the ones I made were yummy.

2nd is my heirloom tomatoes salad at Torc also in Napa.

3rd is my pork belly main course from Torc.

4th my lunch in St. Helena at the classic Gott’s Roadside.  I eat there every time I go to Napa, who doesn’t like spending $60 for lunch for two?:classic_cool:

OK, so first one is our first Grizzly seen because the bus was looking at it.  Then it crossed the road.

3rd one is the RV parked at Teklanika Campground.

4th is me at every pit stop washing the windows with paper towel and squigee with no water.  Everyone cheering me on...:classic_laugh: as everyone likes free labor.  If I am ever a homeless panhandler, I will know how to not clean your windshield.

5th another Grizzly....  we saw probably 2 to 3 dozen.

jc<—— has found something he likes about the new format, it doesn’t capitalize the first letter of my name just like it used to before the last upgrade.:classic_love:

First is the awesome view of Mt McKinley aka Denali from the visitor center with the closest view.  O wait, can’t see the mountain, but you can see me and the flag pole.

2nd the ladies inside.

3rd the ladies at Wonder lake where on a perfect day you could take a picture of the mountain reflected in the lake....  not so much.

4th the elusive Caribou, remember the reindeer fly.

5th ditto

1 The fascinating view from inside the TEK bus whenever some creature has been spotted.  Everyone is whispering about what is it and where is it, as binoculars and telephoto lenses search the vast landscape, and the bus driver lady over her microphone sounding like a first grade teachers... shh.... shh....  shh... OMG.

2 Mother and 2 large cubs we watched them for a long time.  I will post a link to a video later.

3 Me prepping dinner.  There were no cutting boards and I had to use the melamine dishes for prep work.  So. Many compromises.

4 Prepping for bedtime first night as we are building our horrible bed.
