Ocean Medallion on Caribbean Princess

Really, that would PROVE my point that they are tracking me like a puppy and time to leave Princess.

If you think that someone on the crew is going to follow 3000+ pax around the ship every minute, then maybe you do need to leave Princess.

I assume you do not carry a cell phone around with you on land because the cell provider can find out where you are at any moment and they record it. Helpful for the police who are investigating certain people's activities.

They probably have it turned off, wrapped in foil, stored in a RFID case....;);)

Of course they are right now only with the ***** they'll be able to know where you are & how much money you spending per minute. :D

But ... they can track your purchases now, with your cruise card.

On a recent cruise, after ordering a drink, I could check my folio on my phone,

and see the charge for a drink, before the drink had made it to me.

So I guess I can just leave my ***** in the cabin for all it's worth. It doesn't seem to do anything more than the smarter cruise card does.

If so why did they bother with the medallions?

On the 9/1 cruise, Caribe deck. Got the ***** at check in and it was not operational for the first 24 hrs. Saw a bunch of IT peeps with laptops roaming the Caribe deck and viola, returning from breakfast it operated the doors. Handy when you are carrying two lattes. At the coffee bar @ International Cafe the first morning I was asked to tap the ***** interface next to the register and I placed the ***** on it and it changed to green and the young lady said "Thank you Kenneth" and the guys hollered out Kenneth when my lattes were ready. Easy peasy. At the 3 card poker table, they kept placing the card to get you in on the table. Security check in/out going ashore was scanning both. I asked our security lady on the Ultimate Ship Tour why they were doing both and she said they were checking the accuracy of the ***** versus the card. Understandable. The lanyard nice to get, but a bit too wide and short for me, so I switched back to my normal thin lanyard that had the same clip and life was good.

Probably because they're learning from their mistakes on Regal and gradually rolling out the different functions once they're reliably.

First we will be on the CB in November and look forward to using ***** to see for ourselves how it works.

Right now they are running parallel systems, old vs new, to see if there are any problems and as a backup to the new system. Eventually they will discontinue the cards and go 100% with the *****.

Carnival Corp plans to move this to their entire fleet of 10 cruise lines. That may be a long way off considering the problems they have had with the CB but further roll outs will be more successful with fewer problems. The first one is always painful.

I assume that those who are fearful of ***** can wrap them in foil but may find it difficult to open their cabin door or buy anything onboard. Oh and don't forget to put on your foil hat at all times. :')

All decks are now Medallion decks.

I'm wondering if we will get them when we board at the end of the month - our boarding passes do not indicate ***** (which they should/would if we were getting the *****) -- we got the medallions when we were sailing the Regal earlier this year and our boarding passes showed that information. Unfortunately, we had to cancel that cruise a couple of days before sailing so did not experience the ***** then. Still have the medallions in the box!!:cool:

Anyone sailing on the Caribbean Princess will get one. All passengers on all decks are receiving them at check in now. We got our first ones when we boarded on Aug 18 and our boarding passes did NOT indicate we were *****. We are still on the ship so I can confirm all decks are *****.

Regal is a bit different because not all cabins and not even all decks have them. They also mailed them out ahead of time. They will eventually mail them for Caribbean Princess passengers but they aren't at that point yet.

So what if you don't want the *****? Do I even have a choice? What if I lose it? I just got my first cellphone a year ago! Too much technology for my county, rural mind to comprehend!

Several posters, reporting from ships with *****, have said that anyone is free to opt-out, and continue to use a card.

In one case, reported directly from John Padgett.

Some guy on the internet has posted that security will stop you if you aren't carrying a medallion.

Personally, I believe the posts from people actually on the ships.

First ever post...hope I am doing it right! I will be on the Caribbean in less than 2 weeks so I hope to provide an update on the *****. Thanks for all the info!

We have the medallion on Caribbean Princess and it obviously is only partially enabled. Just letting folks know how it is working for us - not going to engage in discussions about all the ways CC experts can do it better.

We have our usual Ruiz’s card and the medallion. Two pictures taken when we boarded, by two different people. Slowed the line down a millionth of a second! Two scans when entering muster as well. All medallions are blue, no status indicated.

The medallion opens our cabin door. First couple of times we had to hold it close to the scanner, now it opens when we approach the room. Quite the surprise first time. Scanner is where the “mailbox” used to be. I noticed papers were left on the floor in front of rooms as there is nowhere else to put them.

The medallion works the same as the card did in the casino. No slot, just scan your medallion or card. Don’t have to worry about leaving your card in machine as you never put it in. Cash out is transferred to your account just as it always was.

Some folks were a bit confused when purchasing a drink while sitting on Lido. Card needed for that. Guy next to us went a bit crazy insisting he was going to use his medallion -after three officers came to explain he really got loud and nasty. The only result - took forever for him to get a drink but he enjoyed being “right” and all the attention.

Free internet for duration of cruise if Platinum or Elite. It is much faster than ever was. No I am not going to measure the speed so don’t take the time to ask.

Bottom line - only difference, right now you have to carry both card and medallion. Medallions works for some things, card for others. They gave everyone a free lanyard that has a plastic holder for card and clasp for medallion. Never saw so many passengers with lanyards!

If that's really true it must be when exiting the ship, otherwise how would they know who has one in they pocket?

That sounds expensive, but you are getting a lot of ugly for the price.

This looks like something an elementary school child would wear.

I was on the first Medallion Cruise for the Regal last year. They sent everyone who received a Medallion one for free. I found it wasn't very useful. The Medallion kept falling out. We just used the holder you wear around your neck.

I thought the wrist holder was the basic standard option?
