Princess Platinum insurance & EZ Air Question

I have a question about Princess platinum insurance and EZ air. We’ve always bought travel insurance on our own and not through the cruiseline. I know all about travel insurance and comparing policies. I am asking specifically about Princess insurance.

For those of you who have used Princess insurance.... if you book cruise and EZ air and have to cancel is both the cruise and the airfare refunded if for a covered reason or given as a credit if using cancel for any reason? We typically book quite far in advance so when we book, airfare is often not available to purchase. How is that handled? Does your insurance premium then increase when airfare added?

Thanks!

covered reason gets you all the cash back except your trip insurance fee of course

in january i had a non covered reason with platinum plan and got a credit . all the math is fuzzy now but i looked my account up. my fare was 338 (had killer cheap casino deal), air was 366. i got a 555 credit back. so that math means 149 left. i forget the exact reason for not getting that back but believe we have 2- 75 dollar credits sitting at jet blue. we got a credit voucher with no amounts on. i forget the reason for this. maybe it's a change fee of some sort? but i know if i wanna use the air i gotta use it by the end of this year and i can take any jet blue flight but i have to book through princess

the cruise credit is good till end of next year.

i believe insurance is based on total $$ amount of cruise and air. i know for sure if you book higher cabin later your premium goes up as i literally just did this today

Thanks for this question. It made me pull up and read through the platinum policy. I knew that by booking EZ air the flights were included under my policy for my 2019 Oz-NZ cruise. However - according to the fine print, as I understand it, the Princess policy covers up to two days before you sail and up to two days before your return flight. Which told me, oops! We need to buy medical coverage for the thirteen days we'll be on our own in NZ! Done. So thanks for the question!

Your insurance premium is based solely on the cruise price & doesn’t increase when adding EZair or hotel packages.

Unfortunately we had to learn how this worked for a recent cruise with EZair that had to be canceled a week before flying to Europe for a covered reason.

Upon cancelling our trip we immediately received a credit to our chargecard for the refundable portion of our payment.

About a month after filing our claim with Aon we each received a check for our portion of the non-refundable cancellation fees.

We were happy with the process which went smoothly & we could check online to see the status of our claim.

Thank you for the information. So you did get all the money you paid both for the cruise as well as EZ air?

Yes...everything was refunded (except the cost of the insurance) including the EZair cost. We pre-paid for a post-cruise transfer to the airport & that was also refunded.

Even if the reason was deemed as a non-covered reason we would have received full credit towards another cruise. Having that option to cancel for any reason works well for us & have found the Princess coverage to cost less for that benefit than with other trip cancellation insurers.

Princess insurance covers every dollar you spent with Princess for the cruise less of course the cost of the insurance. It is a good deal and after researching private vs Princess, we decided to go with Princess. Last cruise we arrived in the port city 12 days before the ship sailed and had to get private insurance for that period.

Thanks for all the info. One more question... if you purchase a cruise and EZ air but have only paid deposit with future cruise deposit and cancel before final payment, do you still have to pay for the Princess insurance.

Our TA doesn't buy the insurance until final payment, so in the two cases we had to move a cruise we had not paid for insurance yet.

But some folks will buy insurance as soon as they book since the lookback period for pre-existing conditions starts when you buy the insurance. Once you buy insurance you probably won't get the money back. Not sure what would happen if you bought insurance early and then just decided not to take the cruise before final payment. Insurance might cover a non-refundable deposit but then might have cost more than the deposit.

If cancelled before final payment you don’t need to have insurance to get a refund minus any non-refundable deposit. To pay for insurance for a NR deposit probably isn’t cost effective unless having a large deposit.

I don’t purchase insurance until final payment but some purchase it earlier when a pre-existing condition hasn’t been treated within the specified 60 day period of time for pre-existing condition coverage.

I was told by a Princess rep when I purchased Princess insurance early (due to pre existing clause) that the cost would be refunded if I cancelled before final payment date but that it would be refunded by the insurance co., not Princess. However given that our experience has been that you sometimes get a different answer from a different rep, maybe that should have been in writing?

While that would be good, I’m skeptical that is true.

I’ve never been in that situation & would want to see that in writing because I wasn’t able to locate that on the Princess website nor on the insurance policy.
