Je02553 Posted October 1, 2018 #1 Share Posted October 1, 2018 I had heard that you are not allowed to wear shirts above the knee in the Vatican but saw pictures and people in the background definitely had shorts on. Can someone confirm this? Also - are backpacks allowed inside? I was told no but want to double check. Thanks! mapleleaves Posted October 1, 2018 #3 Share Posted October 1, 2018 http://www.vaticantickets.org/plan-your-visit/ This section is near the end : Follow the dress code. It is extremely important to be dressed appropriately before you enter the Vatican. Sleeveless blouses, miniskirts, shorts and hats are not permitted. Large bags or backpacks cannot be carried inside. There are however cloak rooms that allow you to store your bags if you’re carrying any.
euro cruiser Posted October 1, 2018 #4 Share Posted October 1, 2018 The rules state that shoulders and knees must be covered but the rules are enforced by human beings so there's bound to be some variation. The problem is that you could get by the guy at the security check and still be stopped and escorted out by guards at the front door of the basilica. If you'd be okay with being turned away, go ahead and wear shorts. If it's important to you to get inside and see the basilica, dress according to the requirements. As they say, their house, their rules.

cobalt206 Posted October 7, 2018 #6 Share Posted October 7, 2018 We just returned from Rome and had a very experienced guide for two days for the Colisseum and Vatican City. He told us long shorts that fall below the knees were acceptable. So we did wear shorts and had no problem at all. The majority of men were wearing long pants. Rare Hlitner Posted October 7, 2018 #7 Share Posted October 7, 2018 You can certainly try to cheat the dress code and you might get away with it. But what will you do if you wait in line for an hour and then are refused entrance because of shorts or a top that does not pass inspection?
