Acqua alta!

I just read about it in the WSJ which has a photo of a woman carrying her child through 2+ ft of water in St. Mark's Square on Monday.  No vaporettos operating either.  I'm not sure if anyone lives on the ground floor as the article says this happens, on average, four times a year.  The article does say many "residents and businesses typically reinforce their doors with metal or wooden panels to prevent water from entering the bottom floors."  It says that the city is building underwater barriers in the lagoon to prevent such flooding in the future.  Weather is bad all over Italy, per the article, with 4 people killed by falling trees in Naples, Lazio and Liguria.  Finally, they closed the Colesseum and Roman Forum early in Rome.  We visited Venice for 3 days in Oct 2011 (17th-20th) pre-cruise and were fortunate to have nice weather.

The MOSE has been built and just sits there rusting away. The mechanisms for controlling it were under water so it was inoperable for this recent flooding. A catastrophic waste of time, energy, resources and above all money that has done nothing to help Venice overcome high water.

Sorry to hear about this dysfunction in Venice.
