Now you tell me! I pay for almost everything on our Amex Platinum. I was taking a short cruise with my sister-in-law, and decided to put it on another card. On the other hand, for all you Amex Platinum people, my husband had a bad jet ski accident back in 1997 when we were on a cruise. They took him back on the ship, although reluctantly, but Amex Platinum med-evac'd him back to NY. The cruise insurance would have only taken him to Miami. That's one of those great Amex perks.

Does Amex Plat still have that type of travel insurance?

I think they discontinued travel insurance entirely a few years back, for a while, but I'm not sure what they replaced it with... if they did (?).

Been using this program for many years booking direct with NCL and with several different TA's

I have never booked the AMEX and always get the credit and Le Bistro added!

Here is a link to the program:

https://www.americanexpresscruise.com/cruises/promos/amex/shopping/cruise_privileges_program.jsp?cobrand=15558&webpagerecno=2357

@jvsnana, did you have to call NCL to get them to apply the perks to your booking, if you booked directly with them? How did you get them to do this?

I might just go through Amex Travel, but I'd prefer to book directly online via NCL, since that way I can apply my CruiseNext certs to the booking, without the hassle (I've had past TAs have trouble applying these).

Your cruise consultant should apply the AMEX benefits.

Although, I don’t see it listed here, anymore.

If you book direct with NCL they will add the AMEX CPP...just ask your Cruise Consultant as graphicguy said above.

I have never booked with Amex Travel and have been able to add the AMEX CPP to all of my cruises that are 5 days or longer 😀

Remember to have the Cruise Consultant send you the NCL Amenity Conformation so you can be sure to bring it onboard with you if you should need to have proof of the OBC and Le Bistro credit.  We have had to prove the free Le Bistro dinner credit on more that one occasion, lol!

Good luck and come back to let us know how it goes!

Thanks! Did you book online and then call the PCC? Or did you call your PCC to book? I’m wondering whether the PCC is more willing to help if you book through them—I’m not sure whether they get the credit for bookings made through the site.

Any thoughts based on past experience? My PCC doesn’t seem to want to respond to emails, and I hate to be on the phone at work with this sort of thing...so...

If you don’t book through NCL directly, you won’t have a PCC.  IF you booked through as Travel Agent, they’ll take care of anything regarding your booking for you, including any promos you’re entitled to.

Right, I just meant if I book myself through NCL.com, would my PCC still be willing to help with the reservation?

I've always thought that they were sort of more for sales, and if the cruise is already booked and paid for (without them), they have limited incentive to help out. But I could be wrong about that?

I probably should just book through a TA, but the one time I tried that, they had all sorts of trouble with my CruiseNext cert, and it wound up being a huge hassle, so I've sort of been averse to trying it again. Plus I hate being on the phone -- what can I say, I'm a millenial, I'd rather just use a webpage. 😂

It actually is the case. It says so right in the terms and conditions. I’m not sure how your TA gets it for you but it specifically says that payment MUST be made using your Platinum Amex card.

I think one of two things are happening:

1. They get some OBC from their TA and think it’s from Amex.

2. They’re lying.

As you said, the T&C are very clear. I find it hard to believe that a TA is outsmarting American Express.

Just to add personal experience - if you split payment with your AMEX and another card, you won’t get the OBC and Bistro.  Whole cruise must be paid with your AMEX (not including cruise next cert).  Learned hard way when I paid deposit with AMEX and balance with NCL Card.

I would certainly call NCL and ask for a PCC to help with your reservation.  NCL is going to either pay a commission to their PCC or a Travel Agent.  May as well get some use out of them.

All perks can be used with AMEX PLAT.  You should also get the AMEX specific perks (Specialty Dinner, Champaign, OBC) regardless of how you book.

Call NCL and let us know what they say.

They just added to their travel benefit trip delay and cancellation benefits.  Not sure if it’s only for new bookings or existing ones, though.

So I’ve now read post #1 twice. Post #1 makes no reference to free at sea. Thank you for being of absolutely no help.

So what part of "on top of what NCL, and my TA, was giving" is confusing??

Do you need someone to specifically mention every promo, Suite perk, Haven perk, CAS perk, etc to understand what "on top of" means??

"on top of" : in addition to, a combination of, to include

You're welcome

Where did you see that, @graphicguy? That's a new one on me.

The Amex Plat perks wound up being a moot point: I wound up booking a Sailaway rate, and from Amex's literature, their perks don't apply to Sailaway rates. Even doing a mock booking through Amex Travel, it doesn't show the perks being available on Sailaways. It's a bummer -- a $200 OBC on a Sailaway Balcony would have been more than enough to cover any bar bill (we aren't big drinkers).

The sailaway rate was so cheap for this sailing (10/20 to Bermuda) that it made more financial sense to go with that over a perks-eligible rate.

The blurb was in an email AMEX sent me.  I discarded it.  Let me see if I can dig it out of the trash on my computer.

I haven't done a Sailaway rate, yet.  Some of those look mighty tempting, though. I have booked GTY rates as they offered some (not all) of the perks.  And, since I like my cocktails when I sail, that's worth something to me.

I totally get the rates for the Sailaway and GTY categories, though.
