Luv2cruz1000 Posted January 13, 2019 #1 Share Posted January 13, 2019 I wondered if you sail close enough to shore on a Italy and Greece cruise to see scenery or is it just water when you sail? We have been to Alaska and enjoyed seeing the landscape! ( cruise leaves from Barcelona,Marsaille,Rome,Florence,Naples, corfu,And Kotor)

CruiserBruce Posted January 13, 2019 #3 Share Posted January 13, 2019 If you sail the Straits of Messina during the day, absolutely. And possibly Mt Etna. Otherwise you are generally off shore, until you approach port.
Rare cruisemom42 Posted January 13, 2019 #4 Share Posted January 13, 2019 As already mentioned, you won't see a lot of land while cruising. The ships are too far out. However, some of the ports in the Med really have fantastic sail-in / sail-out views that are worth watching. The approach to Kotor, for example, is through Kotor Bay, which is stunning. Be prepared to watch, starting from about an hour ahead of your arrival in Kotor. Or if that will be too early in the a.m. for light, then be sure to watch the sail out. Some other ports in the Med (unfortunately not on your itinerary) that have great approaches include Venice, Istanbul, Malta, Santorini, Giardini Naxos (for Taormina, Sicily), and Sorrento. Naples is not bad either because you dock right in the city center. If you are on a ship cruising southward and then east out of Athens, you will sometimes hug the coast for a while and one can sometimes catch sight of the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, on at the tip of the cape.
