Cafedumonde Posted March 6, 2019 #1 Share Posted March 6, 2019 I have googled this and get different answers. Trying to find out how much cash we need to get to Magens Bay in the open air taxis and to get into the beach. Thanks!
cruiseapril Posted March 7, 2019 #2 Share Posted March 7, 2019 We recommend a ship's tour to Magens- ours wasn't much more than a taxi and we made a few stops. The entry fee was included.
Karysa Posted March 10, 2019 #3 Share Posted March 10, 2019 $

tallyho8 Posted March 14, 2019 #5 Share Posted March 14, 2019 The new taxi monopoly will not allow you to get a private taxi to Magens Bay.

I do like using ships tours as we have credit to pay for plus they will get us back on time. Our day in St Thomas is a short one.

Cafedumonde Posted July 3, 2019 Author #11 Share Posted July 3, 2019 We didn’t see any private taxis. It all seems controlled by some group taxi entity.
Ms411 Posted July 4, 2019 #12 Share Posted July 4, 2019 Just like in many other cities, before Uber, many taxis in the VI choose to organize and form associations so they can bid on contracts to be the exclusive taxis that can pick up from popular locations like the airport, large hotels, ferry docks, and some beaches. The taxis are either owned by the driver or leased from a licensed taxi driver who has chosen for whatever reason they are not going to be on the road either temporarily or permanently. There are many taxi drivers who are not in an association and they may not be able to solicit passengers from certain locations. They generally do not have a medallion with the name of a taxi association on top of the roof of their taxi. They usually ride around looking for passengers or have other ways of attracting passengers. Any taxi can be public or private. The fares most often quoted are the fares for shared public taxis. If you want a private taxi for just your group, you can request one, but it is usually more expensive. The taxis at Havensight are one association, Crown Bay has another association, Magens Bay another, and so on. All fares are regulated by the VI government and are supposed to be consistent no matter which association provides the transportation, but there have been times when a driver has been flexible by quoting a higher or lower rate than another driver. Taxis are abundant in popular destinations. Tourism can't survive in the VI without an adequate supply of taxis.
