i have been at a sewing retreat since Friday so just getting caught up on your adventures.  Despite some changes, all looks amazing!

One of the assistant cruise directors is Tomas.  (A man).  Erin is still on but haven’t seen Alice.

 

I erred the other day when I said the PG manager’s name.  It is Tudor, not Thomas.  Must have had the asst CD’s name in my head - stupid me.

More beautiful tile work on these houses in Chiado.  Because the area is so hilly if there is an earthquake and the house at the top of the hill goes, it acts like a domino effect and brings all the other houses down.  This one has been fortified to help prevent that in the future.

 

 

 

Beautiful little streets.

 

This priest is our guide’s hero and and he is pleased they did a monument to him.  He helped save 100’s of indigenous children from slavery in Soputh America.  Yes, the Portuguese were in South America before Columbus was in North America.  It was a well kept secret and they brought back many slaves.

Well, even though I am still on Portugal pics - LOL, (I am nearly done and will catch up with luck in a day)  we are in Ceuta Spain today.

I’ve been trying to upload the Fado music for three days.

 

The videos are dark - it’s just the music you will experience.

 

I only did snippets of parts as I knew CC could only handle so many mb.

This is our 2nd time at Senor Fado and we were welcomed back with open arms.

 

They treat you like a guest in their home.  

 

Maria set up 2 tables of 6 one behind the other for our group which I thought was very nice.

Well, since I finally got the videos from Fado uploaded, here’s a few pics from the night for you all.

 

We always start out with some little appetizers, tastings:

 

 

 

Here is our little group that went to Fado that night.  I was too close (and the room is small) so I had to take several pics to get everyone in properly.

 

 

 

 

 

 

I forgot about the food porn when the food arrived.  There are two different offerings - a seafood type of stew and the typical Portuguese pork (it doesn’t taste like pork - delish)

 

They gave us one of each huge containers for each table.

 

This is George.  No one had the heart to eat George - LOL.

 

 

As you can see by the dish, there wasn’t much left despite the huge serving.

I hate to lose this fabulous wifi, but our little bite and drink break time is up.

 

I’ll be back later to finish Lisbon and then we can move on to our lovely ports we are visiting.

Have to find a place with wifi at 2 pm as DH was interviewed for television here in Ceuta.  (I think they were happy he spoke Spanish - LOL).

First thank you for interrupting your fabulous time to share everything with us.

 

I can not even image the painstaking work required to put those beautiful tiles on the exterior of the house. Did your guide mentions what happens when one gets damaged? Is there a historic tile restorer in Lisbon?

 

The Fado music gives one a sense of experiencing the authentic Lisbon. How amazing. It appears as if the performer was sitting at your table.❤️

 

And kudos to Jose and his newly found fame! Hope someone asks him for his autograph.

p.s. On my last cruise - my amazing waiter Abdul would bring me a main entree and a “taste” of anything else I wanted to try. Not sure how HAL would charge for that now, but I had some pretty amazing meals on that cruise.  

 

And I never left anything on my plate. Good thing I walked a lot!

Regarding the tiles - there are several different kinds.  There are the old mosaic ones, ceramic, then the ceramic made by machine not hand, and finally a kind that they stick on.

 

When it comes to the old mosaic ones (mostly what I was taking pics of), the tiles will last for 400-600 years!!!!  The ones manufactured by machine are usually good for 300 years and the ones they stick can fade over time and usually have to be replaced in 60 years at the latest.

 

They do have craftsmen that can repair if needed by the older ones rarely need it, amazingly enough.

The performer was right in front of our table.  I was at the end and I could literally reach out and touch them if I wanted, so I was very close.

 

Thanks on behalf of Jose.  We were surprised. They wanted to know where the ship had been and where we were going and how we liked Ceuta, etc.

 

I think she was VERY happy Jose spoke Spanish.

I’ve had “tastes” too 😉. In fact we got one to share last night - an appetizer.

 

We’re back on board the lovely Prinsendam.  All aboard is in 30 minutes so we thought we should be good 😉

Still in Lisbon, sorry - but nearly done..  This is the thanks to the priest whose statue I showed earlier.

 

 

 

This solder is part of the National Guard and one stands in front of their headquarters at all times!  The building is an important part of Lisbon’s history as this is where the Fascist headquarters were.  We were sitting in the very spot where the revolt took place and they were overthrown.  

 

 

The people got a bit of revenge on them.  They blew out the windows of the building and then the square was loaded with all the poets, musicians, etc. Who had been banned by the Fascist regime and the Fascists were forced to listen to the music, poetry, etc. For a week before they were allowed out of the building.

Then we went to this amazing church.  The roof caved in during the great earthquake, so it is now a combination of a theatre and a museum.  It was sad to see how hard it was to read one of the few Jewish artifacts remaining.  Most have been lost.

 

 

 

 

 

The church itself.  It hangs (literally) on a cliff.  Two Jewish cement masons found a way to support it when it was starting to fall apart and one part threatening to go down the clifff.

 

 

If you look closely at the archway, you’ll see that it is not straight.  This is from the building cracking and nearly going.  The ledge on the floor - right hand side that is higher - that’s where it happened.  They could not get this section completely level despite all the ingenuity.

 

 

Inside the museum - that part has been given a roof to preserve the antiquities.
