Paying gratuities onboard

We’ve always pre-paid gratuities in the past but for two upcoming cruises, we are not pre-paid.  I’ve heard our account will be assessed a daily charge of $20 to cover gratuities.  Is that correct?

From the Celebrity website faqs

Gratuity Program
Q.

What is Celebrity’s automatic gratuity program?

A.

For your convenience, we automatically add gratuities for your restaurant and stateroom services to your onboard SeaPass® account on a daily basis in the following amounts, which may be adjusted at your discretion:

  • $14.50 per person, per day in standard accommodations
  • $15.00 per person, per day in Concierge Class and AquaClass® staterooms
  • $18.00 per person, per day in suites

This gratuity is shared by your stateroom attendant, dining services staff, and housekeeping staff members who help enhance your vacation experience. At your discretion, the gratuity payments may be adjusted onboard at Guest Relations, in which case they will not automatically be added to your onboard SeaPass® account. A 20% gratuity will be automatically added to all beverages, mini bar purchases, spa and salon services. Additional gratuities may be added at your discretion.

No

No you paid the gratuity percentage 18% recently raised to 20% at the time you purchased the package.  If it was a perk included with your booking it is also already covered.  If you purchased at the prior 18% rate you will not be charged the extra 2%.  You are grandfathered.

For those that find some drink cheaper on another Line, go for it, but my personal view is you need to evaluate and compare the entire experience, not the price of some drink. On the Lines I’ve cruised on, I find Celebrity’s drink prices to be pretty close to most other LInes, except maybe a few of the very discount Lines.

For those that don’t buy anything onboard, boy the at-sea days and the times after we leave port which is usually late afternoon makes for a looooong day without buying a few drinks and things.

Sorry....one more question.  We do have the Premium drink package.  Will there be a separate gratuity charge for drinks?

Only if you order a drink priced higher than the Premium Package $15 ceiling price and then only on the excess. For example, if you order a $18 glass of wine, then you will pay ($18 - $15) x 1.20 = $3.60.
