Excursions - Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Puerto Costa Maya

Recommended Posts

Costa Maya actually has a really nice port.  If you don't want to pay to do anything, just walk around the port.  Lots of shops/restaurants and also has a free pool.  We like to go out to the beach so going to the same beach we went to in Dec, just using a different vendor.  Doing the Nohach Kay beach break with islandmarketing.com.  $100 per couple for all inclusive.  You can see the ship from the beach.  $8 per up to 4 people for the cab, 8 minute cab ride.  Water was gorgeous and we really enjoyed it out there so thrilled to be going again in Dec when we are in Costa Maya.

We have done Maya Chan 6 times, so obviously, I'm a big fan.

In Cozumel, we have done Nachi Cocum 4 times, but last visit we tried El Cozumelino, another all inclusive day resort. Very nice. Fabulous pool, great service. Food not as good as Nachi. We love Cozumel and feel safe there.

Thank you! It looks like something my husband would want to do! He likes the Jeep/4x4 tours and I like the tequila and lunch! As long as he is able to drive he will love it!

We own a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and tequila trumps Jeep/4x4 tours in Mexico any day.  You may want to check out "The Original Cozumel Bar Hop" for a fabulous day of tequila/Xtabentun tasting and yummy seafood lunch on the other coast of Cozumel.  We are getting ready to do this for the third time during our upcoming cruise.  Yea, he can be the DD, driving his Jeep/4X4 😂

We've done Maya Chan twice and have been very pleased.  Looks like they raised their price a bit, I think we paid $55 last time.  Don't get discouraged by the bumpy ride there, it's part of the adventure.

@Host Clarea

You have?  Really?  Did you like it?  😉

We are looking forward to going to Paradise Beach again in Cozumel, but haven't decided what to do in Costa Maya. If we stay in the port area, is there a good beach with loungers there?

There is no beach immediately at the port in Costa Maya.  There is a pool with loungers that is completely free for use.  There's a lot to walk around and see immediately in the port, but if you want a beach you can walk through the port and take the tram shuttle for $4 per person (as of November 2018 as far as I know) to Mahahual where there are several places along the Malecon/boardwalk that will rent you chairs and umbrellas for the day.

I'll 2nd the massages on the beach @ Costa Maya. Approx $60 an hour and was one of the best my wife and I have ever had, in fact we typically compare any new massages to them.

There is so much to do in Cozumel We'll have to go there at least 20 more times to do it all. We loved Xplor park in 2014 so much (all day zip lines, cave swimming, and dun buggy riding  plus great food) that we are doing it again in November. It was a tough choice to repeat an excursion with so many other great things to try.

Maya Chan is out, the whole place is reserved the day I’m going. What are your other favorites that are like Maya Chan in Costa Maya? I’m also looking for a Jeep excursion in grad cayman or Cozumel? My husband doesn’t like the trikes.

You might see some ideas in the port of call forum:

grand cayman is beautiful!! one of my favorite ports. we did the Segway beach tour in Jan '18, it was so much fun and the beach was great! we would do it again in a heart beat.

we did Cozumel that same cruise and my boyfriend and parents did the Sea Trek helmet dive. my anxious self couldn't grasp the whole breathing with a helmet 10 ft underwater so I sat this one out. my parents have done this at other ports and loved it, and while they enjoyed this one, they said it was much better elsewhere. I wouldn't waste  the ~$100 pp for this excursion. we're going back to Cozumel on our upcoming cruise Jan 2020 and still haven't decided on an excursion!

I'm just seeing this! I will have to take a look, it sounds amazing!

We just returned from an 8 day RC cruise that had stops in Costa Maya and Cozumel.

Here's my take on both:

  1. Costa Maya - This is not a historic village. It is a circular venue manufactured to contain cruiser passengers and their funds. To me, it looks like a Disney-inspired rendering of a Mexican village. Some people like the safety and comfort of this insulation but it is not my cup of tea. They have created the port in a way that makes it difficult and confusing to exit the port area, Las Vegas casino-style. Once you get outside the village, there is not much in the immediate vicinity. We did none of the cruise excursions but booked a day-reservation with Almaplena Eco Beach resort http://www.almaplenabeachresort.com/.  Taxi service was very easy and was coordinated with Almaplena. All the drivers know how to get there. It's about a 20 minute cab ride and was insanely beautiful and secluded. Maybe 12 people were at the resort when we were there. So glad we did this. However, since it is not a cruise-sponsored activity, you'll get little assistance from anyone inside the port area. Stay in contact with Almaplena and you'll get in and back easily.
  2. Cozumel - We again ventured outside of the cruise-excursions and spent the day at Cozumel Pearl Farm. Holy S___! Best family excursion we've ever taken. Spent 6 hours in completely secluded beach on the north end of Cozumel and saw no one but our hosts. Only accessible by boat. Too much fun to list here but check out my blog post on the day's events. So easy and fun. We had the run of the island all day and learned a ton about pearl farming! Full article here: https://www.maineterrain.com/tour-pearl-farm/

I haven't found it dangerous to rent a car at all. Rented Jeeps twice and a Volkswagen buggy last time. Love driving around the island. So many places to see. Lighthouse, bars beaches etc. I might think differently if I was driving and parking downtown. Punta Sur Park is awesome. Private beaches, Food, Salt water crocks, cheap boat tour in the shallows.

We tried to book Maya Chan and they recommended 40 Canones. We have been to both and they were both great.
