clo Posted July 3, 2019 #26 Share Posted July 3, 2019 Back in the 90s my husband used to spend time there on business. He didn't consider it "dangerous" but definitely "third world."

Love FP but much more to see and do in Europe. Including a bunch of crossings. I guess we are both happy. Good for us.
Starlaker Posted July 4, 2019 #31 Share Posted July 4, 2019 Direct flights over Iceland & Greenland to Europe aren't bad from Seattle. We never take a flight to Europe that connects on the East Coast.

Took a shore ex to the capital, Santo Domingo. Our tour bus had an armed guard, and he was always present during our walking tour. The tour guide cautioned us not to wander away from the tour group. Very scary. It has been mentioned by PAXs on CC the reason why cruise lines, including Oceania, is because even though dangerous, it is cheap for cruse lines to make D.R. a port of call. Next time I will definitely stay on the ship during that port of call. No need to see it again. 👎 More often than most people are aware, an excursion is escorted by someone who is armed.

Wonderful way to go on a tour while on vacation. Armed guards..... Did that a few years ago in Egypt and did not know if we should be very scared because they were expecting something to happen or happy to have them. Really do not want to do that again. The DR is not worth it as there is nothing there anyway. Egypt another story.

Jayne E Posted July 4, 2019 Author #35 Share Posted July 4, 2019 Egypt is an amazing country....worth taking precautions.....def not DR! Furthermore, the port that Oceania is using in Puerta Plata next year is owned and operated by Carnival Cruise Lines. Carnival built and uses it for their Carnival cruises. Obviously Oceania got a cheap price for docking there and removed St. Martin. Google the port. See what you think. For those who say that next time they will stay on the ship, or go ashore and eat/drink nothing..... let Oceania know what you think of DR being added as a "new port". Otherwise Haiti will be the next stop!! Several years ago Oceania was stopping in Lesbos, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and the negative feedback to Oceania was heard. Yes Egypt is a wonderful country, or was. Been there done that and the way things are in this world today would not do it again. Not worth the risk these days.
