Do we need a ETA or visa to visit Australia

If you are a US citizen, you need an ETA to enter Australia.  Apply for it through the official Australian government website:

You do need a online visa.

Make sure you use the government website,there’s lots of agents that charge extra.

That’s a big thing these days gut,once they have it they don’t give it back.

Because the Australian government secures the private information that you submit.   What’s EasyETA doing with it?

I would be very suspicious also.  That is a first where an agent charges less than the official government website!

 

My first question would be "How would you know your ETA has been electronically linked to your passport?".

it asks if you were known by other names. I don’t want to fill it out wrong

In my thinking it is more like Dwayne Johnson,  alias The Rock.

I’m inclined to agree, but thenever I need to apply for such things for Mrs Gut, I throw in the Maiden name, better safe than sorry is my usual motto.

How far in advance should we apply for our ETA?  We are arriving in Sydney the end of March, 2020.  Our cruise leaves on April 4, 2020.

 

I understand that we now also need a visa for NZ.

Thanks.  Princess sent the link to us a well, but someone on our roll call mentioned it was too early for NZ.  I was just wondering how far in advance for Australia?  I looked at the official application site but did not find any mention of how long the ETA is good for.

The Australian ETA is valid for 12 months, so if you are traveling in March/April, you may apply for it now.  I would recommend applying for your ETA before booking any non-refundable travel because there is always a (small) chance that it could take awhile for the ETA to be granted.  (It generally takes a matter of minutes, but you could be one of the “lucky” ones requiring more scrutiny.)   I recommend reading the information on the official Australian website about ETAs.  (The “12 month” limit is listed under “ETA Conditions”)

And, yes, effective in October 2019, US citizens are required to obtain an ETA to enter NZ.  See this info from the official NZ government website:   https://www.immigration.govt.nz/about-us/media-centre/news-notifications/electronic-travel-authority

I did my ETA last week or before that and I still haven’t heard a thing. I bet I am one of the longer ones where it takes longer.

Just after 9/11  I went to the USA and had a long interview with a LAX  boarder official.

He was very pleasant fellow but he demonstrated how he knew more about me than I knew about myself.

Things like my grandfathers middle name, my grandmothers sisters name.

He said he could go on and I’m Australian without a traffic infringement for 30 years.
