You can Google search a couple of your ports for weather...for example "Juneau September weather".

Its about layers. If you take a heavier sweater or sweatshirt, you can going with a lighter outside garment. All depends on your clothing set and temperature tolerance.

Gortex does nothing for heat retention - in fact due to it's breathability, it's arguably LESS warm than a non-permeable material as it lets the warm, moist air inside your clothes get outside.

Bruce is correct that layers are what you want rather than a heavier coat - efficient packing is all about bringing items that you will use in more than one circumstance. Regardless of what your outer layer is made of, it's not supposed to keep you warm - it just keeps the rain and wind away. Inner layers are for warmth - so if you're concerned about the temperature you should bring a fleece or sweater that fits over your base layer and under your shell.

I've been to SE Alaska both in September and October.  Each time I have had a water-proof (not water resistant) outer layer, and needed it.  While you may have better weather than I have experienced at that time of year, be prepared for serious rain.

Wow that was really helpful.    Your only 129 post away.

The OP made it sound like they wanted it for "warmth". I thought maybe they confused the concept of goretex.
