How safe did you feel?

Hubby has told me horror stories about Jamaica, and how if you go there for a land vacation you shouldn’t leave your hotel compound.  I’ve got to think that the cruise excursions are completely safe - but having said that, anyone feel otherwise?  Being mildly hassled by vendors is one thing, but being surrounded is another.

Also if we decide to do a DIY day and walk around the port area, are there any decent beaches nearby (or taxi/bus-able) and is that reasonably safe?  I’m a pretty experienced traveler and know better than to flash jewelry or money, and am pickpocket-aware, but we are clearly American and I’ve been told that Americans are considered rich and are a target....

So, the only time I felt unsafe was wandering into the area outside of the main dock area.  When I walked alone, several men offered me “party favors”.  When I was walking with a group of female friends, a very pushy older man solicited us for something else... which was... interesting?!! Lol.  At least it’s a good story to tell...
