CBD use on River Cruise

I use CBD cream at home for various aches and pains (legal in the state I live in). I will not bring it with me since I am flying. Would it be possible to buy it in Amsterdam for my use on the cruise to Switzerland? I’m not sure what the rules are in the different countries we will be visiting. It would stay in my room at all times. I would not take it off the boat with me.

I don’t want to get in trouble or put others in jeopardy,  if this isn’t a possibility guess I’ll just use Aspercream while I’m gone.

Buy in Amseterdam. Where? Dispose of at the end of the trip. How?

Most important is Viking's position. Illegal drugs are on the on-board prohibited list:

In Germany: https://www.drhempme.com/legal-status-cbd-oil-germany/ In Germany, possession of any form of cannabis (with the exception of legal specified cannabis and CBD products), is illegal and punishable by law with a fine up to €25,000 or jail time of 2 years.

Bottom-line seems to be stick with Aspercreme.

Thanks for the information. That’s kind of what I was thinking.  Vikings list of prohibited items is interesting. We aren’t going on Viking but I have yet to see any list of prohibited items from the company we are sailing with and we have taken four cruises with them. Looks like Aspercreme is my best option or a glass of wine. Hopefully the knee won’t flare up.

In Germany CBD Oil is legal so long as it does not contain THC (very important).

CBD Oil can be bought at most phamacies.

You can get anything in Amsterdam.😉😇

Never heard of any river cruise boat having a brig.

Highly unlikely anyone would ever know, or care.  To the security screeners, it'll look just like another tube of cream or ointment.  And security screeners are very unlikely to care about possible illicit drugs.  Not their job.

Even on Viking, you have to dig deep to find this list.

Do any river cruise lines screen baggage? My only experience is on Viking who don't have any screening tech on board their European river ships. I seriously doubt whether any others do, so I wonder why you mention security screeners since OP specifically mentioned not flying with the CBD oil.

Flawed logic.

OP proposes buying legal CBD in the Netherlands.

Quoting from your links:

Germany was one of the first countries in the EU to legalise cannabis. In March 2017, the Government gave the green signal for the legalisation of the sale and consumption of cannabis and its derivatives like CBD oil, marijuana flowers & cannabis extracts.

Switzerland: Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is responsible for the narcotic effect of cannabis. Products made from cannabis plants that contain very little THC (less than one per cent) can be bought and sold legally.

From a separate source: France: The Minister for Health announced in November 2017 that the presence of CBD in products for public consumption was authorised providing it has a maximum of 0.2% of THC (the psychoactive element in cannabis).

Discussing “illegal drugs are on the on-board prohibited list” is a non sequitur since CBD with low THC is not illegal in the countries visited on this cruise.

Interesting question.

Is the cream something you buy off the shelf or made up by a pharmacist?

Some of the commercially made products for chronic pain and other conditions  make all sorts of claims that lack evidence.

If you have found something that works for you that's good.

Searching for medications albeit topical ones could be difficult, albeit we have always found pharmacies in Europe very helpful.

However if I was after a particular product used at home I would take it with me. How long are you planning to be away?

The main issue as others have said  would be around the ingredients in the product, in terms of quantity and quality to be effective and safe.

Sometimes there maybe only a very small amount but it sounds good in marketing.

Regardless, the cruise line's rules as to what is permitted on board and what isn't is the deciding factor as far as I am concerned. Liquor is legal but many cruise lines do not let you bring it on board. The similar for CBD. It may be legal in the countries the ship is sailing through but it may be prohibited by the cruise line. Therefore, we should be asking the cruise line directly if we may bring a certain drug on board the ship.

Interesting conversation. Pully8,  I cannot bring it with me from my home in the USA. It is legal to buy and use in the state I live in from a store that sells marijuana products. However it Is still illegal on a federal level so I would never try to go through TSA and get on a plane with it. Not worth the risk of getting caught.

It definitely works for me to ease pain. I’ve told all my doctors that I either use the cream or take the CBD tincture and everyone of them was fine with it. It was the only thing that stopped horrible back pain from a slipped disc.

I’ll just take it easy on the cruise and hope for the best.

Oh I see so it is classed as legal in your state to use for  medicinal purposes but not beyond.

Lots of debate worldwide and mixed evidence. No personal experience on my part or wish to try but have read the reports.

Glad you found something that helps.

Sensible and prudent not to test how legal or not, purchase/supply and possession might be in other places.

Enjoy your cruise.

Another thought would be how travel insurance would view being positive on blood tests, if an injury occurred?

Unlikely with a topical agent but there was a case recently of a man who fell on a river cruise.

He was severely injured and hospitalised in Austria.

He had travel insurance but because he was found to have alcohol in his blood test the claim and related costs were denied.

It was in the fine print in the terms  and conditions. https://7news.com.au/news/travel/insurance-refuses-to-pay-after-grandfather-fractures-skull-on-trip-of-a-lifetime-c-212281

That I will agree with. But quoting a rule that does not apply (by your links CBD with low THC is not illegal in the geographical area of concern) from a cruise line the OP is not using does nothing but confuse the situation and run up your post count. If it is legal and not explicitly forbidden by the cruise line you may bring it.

The truth is legal questions should never be addressed on a social media board.  I can only imagine being questioned by the authorities and claiming, “cruise critic said it was fine!” 🙂

Why not!

Especially when one lives in one of the countries in question.

Other members can offer their advice or experiences, b ut in the end the OP has to decide what they will do.

Remember this story?  https://www.insideedition.com/media/videos/grandma-arthritis-arrested-disney-carrying-cbd-oil-53147

I would not chance carrying CBD anywhere outside of my state.  My husband purchased a small vial of very expensive CBD cream.  So far he cannot tell any difference.  We are leaving on a trip within the US.  I've told him to leave the cream home. 😏
