Is there a tax per drink with a package or just tax on the package price?

Not sure what tax you are referring to.  I've never paid a purchase sales tax on a package nor port sales tax on any drink on any MSC US sailing.

There is a 15% service charge added to drinks' prices onboard (if you don't have a package) and when purchasing packages onboard (which you avoid if you pre-purchase).  However, there is no sales tax added to either.

My heart missed a beat on reading the above, but I have quickly caught up with your posts across the thread. So disappointing, but great that your DH has made a good recovery and you got home without further incident.
