Crunchymom Posted December 12, 2019 #1 Share Posted December 12, 2019 My oldest was recently diagnosed with celiac's disease. Anyone know how cruises are with their gluten free options? We're considering another cruise next year and it just dawned on me this will be another thing to worry about it. 😞
gooch47 Posted December 12, 2019 #2 Share Posted December 12, 2019 I've overheard people asking for gluten free stuff and the waiter says, "No problem." If you are really concerned I'd speak to the Head Waiter at each meal for assurance.
Cruiser_1977 Posted December 12, 2019 #3 Share Posted December 12, 2019 You can also contact the cruise line in advance. I think most folks say they still head straight for the Maitre D' upon boarding to ensure their needs are met.
peperadar Posted December 12, 2019 #4 Share Posted December 12, 2019 We have cruised with our daughter who is gluten free, and she had no problems. My wife is dairy free and has a severe allergy to bell peppers and she has had no problem. As people mentioned earlier, speak to Maitre D on boarding, and with head waiter before each meal for peace of mind, but you should have no problem.
mjkacmom Posted December 12, 2019 #5 Share Posted December 12, 2019 On NCL, we contact the special needs department ahead of time, it’s noted on our reservation, and the dietary manager meets with us at lunch on the first day after boarding. My daughter usually orders her breakfasts and dinners ahead of time, and sticks to prepared gf food at lunch.
SRF Posted December 12, 2019 #6 Share Posted December 12, 2019 On Grandeur of the Seas (Royal Caribbean), there is a Gluten Free Corner in the Windjammer (buffet). They can easily handle this issue.
donaldsc Posted December 12, 2019 #7 Share Posted December 12, 2019 They are very good at handling Celiacs disease down to a special gluten free toaster at the buffet. DON
Crunchymom Posted December 12, 2019 Author #8 Share Posted December 12, 2019 Wow, this is all really good to know! On our last cruise, I think I remember seeing foods labeled gluten free at the buffet but at that time I wasn't purposely looking. How about the 24 hour pizza? He loved the cruise pizza, which consisted of probably 90% of what he ate the whole cruise, lol....he's 15. I'm assuming there's a gluten free option? It has been a struggle with this diagnosis because he was already picky to begin with, now he's even more limited. And gluten free foods aren't exactly cheap. 😞

Almost all pizzerias in my area offer gf pizza and pasta. I’m so glad it has become a fad.
