Captains Welcome Dinner

For those of you that are on a cruise or just got off which night was the Captains Welcome dinner? I am trying to figure out which nights we want to dine in the specialty venues. In the past the Captains Welcome dinner was pretty special. Maybe that has changed?

There are no ship-wide Captain's Welcome Dinners on Oceania ships. There is a Captain's Welcome Cocktail Party, which is often held on a first sea day (or port day with early departure for short cruises with no sea days) of each cruise segment. There are occasional "invitation only" Captain (and/or other senior officers/crew) dinners (a changing group of 6-8 passengers) held throughout the cruise and they are usually held in Privee on the O ships and the GDR on the R ships. In most cases, invitees will find an RSVP invite in their cabin.

 

Many of these invites are based on loyalty and/or cabin level (and/or some unspecific VIP status). On longer cruises, you may also find

folks like the GM and Exec Concierge dining in a specialty restaurant with a passenger couple (or two) who are their long term friends/acquaintances (or owe them money? 👀😎). In general, the food served is what's on the venue's menu for that evening.

 

Perhaps you're suggesting that the regular GDR dinner menu on that "Welcome Party" evening is "pretty special"(?). Of course, every dinner on Oceania is "pretty special" in that the menu is probably extra appealing to someone on board.

 

BTW, there's also the O Club parties for anyone whose on their second or later O cruise (I.e., O Club members). On some cruises, there are so many O Club members that there have to be two parties, each on a different night (and, if your nice, you may be invited twice 😉).

 I do not recall a Captains  special Dinner menu  since way back  before 2007

NIght of Captain's Cocktail party is a great night to eat in a specialty restaurant. Reason is, because of the Captain's party, the Grand Dining Room is often mobbed when the party is over with large numbers of guests wanting to dine at once. While we have usually found service in the GDR pretty good, sometimes the large numbers of diners at once can overwhelm the kitchen and servers, resulting in slow service. We try and schedule specialty dining on that night, when we can.

On our last few cruises the Captain's Cocktail Party has been on the second night of the cruise- starts somewhere 5:30 to 6PM until 8PM.

I considered the second night the "captain's dinner" since it had lobster and a couple of high end appetizers.

That is my recollection as well.
