Wishing on a star Posted December 27, 2019 #1 Share Posted December 27, 2019 We are looking at a Cruise, and really like the itinerary. We can choose from on date that includes two of these lessor stops, or another similar itinerary that includes the other two of these cruise stops. These are in addition to the major places like Rome, Athens, Santorini, etc. Can anyone recommend any of these stops over the others? Glythion Cephalonia Corfu Olympia If you have any interest at all in Greek art and history, the #1 choice is Olympia. And do go to Olympia, not to any of the other fairly lame excursions out of Katakolo (the port for Olympia). Olympia is not a minor stop. Rare cruisemom42 Posted December 28, 2019 #3 Share Posted December 28, 2019 I agree with marazul about Olympia; it's mainly about the history of the Olympics but also the temples and works of art that once decorated the site. The museum onsite is small but well-done and has some priceless pieces. I suspect you mean Gythion? That is also an interesting stop, not so much for Gythion itself, but from there you can visit a pretty Byzantine town, Mystras (and also the original Sparta, which is nearby although little remains of it). Or you can go to the fairytale walled village of Monemvasia, which is full of photo ops. Corfu is an island that is very different to the ones most people think of (e.g., Santorini) in that it is lusher and greener (although still has great beaches). Corfu Town is worth a few hours; nice Orthodox churches, some good souvenir shopping, a pretty promenade where you can sit and watch the world go by. It is also newly popular due to the "Durrells in Corfu" tv series (based on books from this artistic family's real-life experiences). The only one I haven't been to is Cephalonia, but it is supposed to have gorgeous beaches.
bennybear Posted December 28, 2019 #4 Share Posted December 28, 2019 (edited) We loved Kefalonia, spent several days there. There are beautiful beaches and towns. Very different colourful architecture. A beautiful underground lake. The book and movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin were set there. The water is an incredible blue colour.
