Future Cruise Credit doesn't apply to deposit for RSSC

We buy trip cancellation/interruption insurance because it comes with medical evac insurance- a cc doesn't. It also gets me home in first class with the nurse that's required to be in attendance for travel in life and death circumstances. You don't get that with a CC. Maybe your health insurance covers that, but mine sure doesn't. My husband and I are pretty healthy but strange things happen travelling.  I know someone who had to pay to be transported from the ship and it easily topped $50k. After being stabilized on an iffy hospital in the Caribbean he needed to get back to the US.

Besides it's MUCH more difficult to get a credit card to pay for any type of travel claims. Lastly travel insurance is nominal for the amount I spend on a cruise.

CSR comes with $100k evacuation coverage free and we only fly first class as well - and CSR covers your flights and hotels as well as the cruise.  But to each his/her own.

Well, thank you. I guess next time I'll have to use them for my cruise.

f you have card based insurance (like Chase Sapphire Reserve) you get $20,000 per trip coverage for any and all trips booked.  Why would anyone pay for trip cancellation/interruption insurance?

Another factor is that card based insurance will not cover pre-existing condition.  Even if you do not have any (lucky you), if a loved one whose illness or death would cause you to cancel your cruise, if they have a pre-existing condition, you are not covered.  At least, that is my understanding.

You don't need to change dates or anything else.

Does this answer jeb_bud's question about whether credit card based insurance would transfer if the FCC is used for a new cruise in the affirmative?  I wrote to Chase Card services with that question but did not yet receive a reply.

As far as preexisting conditions, (look online for a list of the CSR card terms and conditions)  the coverage is better than you think.  Take a look at their definition of what a preexisting condition is.

They cover all travel costs even if only part of the cost is charged to the card,  so I see no reason that the replacement cruise that you book will not be covered.

Already inquired about the insurance thru chase sapphire, and was told it specifically excludes cancellations associated with a pandemic.

I do not see this as being a problem. Under Regent reassurance plan, if we cancel because of the pandemic, we get FCC, insurance is not involved. If Regent cancels, we can get cash refund.

I need insurance in the event that I have to cancel a future cruise due to my illness or that of a family member, not related to the pandemic.

Agree and just makes sense - that's why we want to move the insurance over to the new cruise.  The insurance said not a problem.

If you need more than $20,000 coverage get two cards (one for you and one for your trip mate (spouse)) and split the charge between the two cards.  If you need more than $40,000 insurance get the Chase Ink Preferred card and split to that as well.  I've collected 3 times.  Once for a $45,000 Antarctic cruise.

SedonaJoel, Just to clarify, Chase Sapphire Reserve has this provision-

"If You are eligible for insurance under multiple Credit Card Accounts, You will only be insured under the Account which provides the largest benefit amount for the loss that occurred."

Are you saying that there is a way around this?

I've always used multiple Chase cards with no problems.  You can call Chase customer service and they will connect you to one of their insurance specialists and you can get a direct answer.

I tried calling Chase Card Services this morning, and the recording said that they are only taking calls for those with immediate problems, consult your Guide to Benefits, etc.  But the language quoted above seems pretty clear to me.  How long ago did you receive benefits under multiple cards?  Perhaps they have changed their policy since then.

OK, I tried a different phone number and was able to speak to a rep.  She verified that the above language is exactly as it appears in regard to multiple Chase accounts.  So if I paid for my trip using my Sapphire Reserve and Chase Freedom card, only the Sapphire Reserve benefits would be paid, which is a max of $20,000.  If I had coverage under a different bank card, then I would be able to combine benefits.

However, the info that you mentioned earlier, that they cover all travel costs even if only part of the cost is charged to the card is quite correct.  So in my case, since I am paying for the cost difference between the 2 cruises with my CSR, I have enough coverage for the uninsurable FCC.

Think hard about that.   This market isn't done going down yet, not even close, especially the cruise line and airline segments.   If NCL goes down much further and this quarantine lasts longer than the scheduled 30 days bankruptcy may be an option.  You don't want to buy and have worthless shares if that happens.

Remember, cheap stocks don't necessarily mean good stocks.

I was in reference to this comment about chase not covering cancellations regarding the pandemic of corona virus.  Did chase mention the pandemic that we are currently experiencing?

As far as trip insurance and the pandemic is concerned:

  • If you are sick with Covid-19, you are covered if your policy went into effect prior to Jan 20,2020. For dates after that, you are not, unless you have cancel for any reason policy (credit card insurance does not provide that).
  • If you cancel your cruise because you are afraid to travel, you are not covered, even if your doctor advises you not to. (other than cancel for any reason) This is really not a factor due to the Regent Reassurance plan.
  • If the cruise line cancels the cruise, they are responsible for compensating you, the insurance policy is not a factor.

Does that address your question?
