Air to Quebec - Delta or United

Hi everyone,

 

We (retirees) have a Princess cruise planned for Canada/New England on October 2^nd.

What airlines would be better from DTW to YQB?

1) Delta (via Toronto) with a 4hr 18m layover.  9:58am – 5:11pm

We are Delta Amex members with not baggage fees.

2) United (via EWR) with a 3hr 13m layover.  8:10am – 2:15pm

The difference in price is about $30pp plus you must add baggage fees for United.

How much are baggage fees on United?

 

We have not used United for over 10 years so we don’t know what to expect.

Also, we have never flown out of Newark.  Any problems there?

Depends on your definition of "better"?

 

For some that means "cheaper".  For others, it means "faster".  For others, it's the hassle factor.  For others, it's short connects.  For others, leisurely connections.

 

On those criteria, you know the first two.  Hassle -- I would take Toronto over Newark for the connection part.  United though would have you clearing Canadian customs in YQB rather than YYZ.  Short vs long connect -- your call.

 

As for baggage fees, the definitive answer always comes directly from the airline website, not a second hand reporting.

 

Personally, I'd be on DL and Westjet.

United is the overall shorter travel time, so I would likely take that. But, as mentioned, what does "better" mean to you?

 

Does Air Canada or Westjet fly non-stop on that route? I would be looking hard there.

 

Edit:...I did the research. Neither AC or Westjet does that route non -stop. But my research shows United much cheaper than anybody else.

If you have checked bags I would go with either United or Air Canada.  Air Canada also flying into DTW and would connect in Toronto.   

 

On United checked bags would clear Canadian customs in Quebec city.   

 

In Toronto Air Canada operates out of Terminal 1 that automatically transfers bags.  WestJet/Delta is in Terminal 3 where you have to walk it through customers.

 

If you don't have checked bags I would do WestJet/Delta.  Just like the two airlines better.

Should also add another option you may want to consider is flying from Windsor airport.  You would need to clear customs on the drive to the airport.  Air Canada and Porter Airlines would be the two options from there.

The 'best' airline for this routing would be Porter.

YQG/Windsor -> YTZ/Toronto Island -> YQB/Quebec City

 

That will also mean you avoid paying the (mostly) US taxes for crossing the border by air.
