CVS33 Posted May 29, 2020 #151 Share Posted May 29, 2020 I understand that the USS Kearsarge picked up many survivors from this tragedy. I had been discharged the prior year and was not on board. During our April 2018 USS Kearsarge reunion, we has a survivor from the Evans share his photos and stories.

zonacruiser25 Posted May 29, 2020 Author #153 Share Posted May 29, 2020 Does anyone else remember things now more fondly than when you were in? I say I would go back to serving on a boat tomorrow but I am sure I would change my mind on the second day!

They rolled out a big project about 3 or four years ago to build a Welcome Home park with a permanent 3/4 scale wall. Lots of hoopla and fund raising but I guess they just pulled the plug on everything at the end of 2019. Saw this one and could not resist posting I was TDY in the 80's to Palmerola (Soto Cano) AFB in Honduras.. Air Force types wanted a pool. Funding said no way. The fire department requested an auxiliary water holding facility and they got it. It was painted blue with a ladder but we never made the mistake of calling it a swimming pool.

zonacruiser25 Posted June 20, 2020 Author #170 Share Posted June 20, 2020 Just saw the Navy may return to Subic Bay. I am sure many shipmates have their stories of PI stops. I was there in the 70's while it was under Marshal Law imposed by Marcos. Sure I would not recognize it now. https://www.onenews.ph/us-navy-eyes-return-to-subic-bay-in-a-commercial-deal
