Up to 450 job cuts from 1600 employees across P&O and Cunard head office in Southampton. All those who remain to take pay cut - just seen this on BBC website. So sorry to read this but not really unexpected in the current circumstances.

Very sad to read, but as said, not unexpected... The whole of the leisure and travel sector is in its boots at the moment... Along with BA's proposed 12,000 job losses and massive changes to Ts and Cs, and other airlines either headed for total collapse or similar reductions, its a worrying time for all in the sector.

Cunard & P&O are claiming furlough for its staff hence 80% pay and 80% work. Government have just extended the scheme until later in the year. Making staff redundant is rough medicine considering the amount of money Cunard has just borrowed and also hanging onto millions of passengers money that is not theirs. This has the making of another Thomas Cook scenario.... Seems more likely Cunard will fold

Cunard have not borrowed an amount of money it is Carnival Corp which is a big difference.

If employees are furloughed they are not allowed to perform any work for their employer. If Cunard employees are working 80% of the time, Carnival UK will be paying them not the government.

HH, you beat me to it.

Also, as announced the Chancellor today,  wef August the furlough scheme will become more flexible to allow a phased return to work.

Very sad for those who have lost their jobs, but fully expected with the almost complete cessation of the industry. This does further reinforce Carnival aren't expecting a 'bounce back' recovery.

Cunard can't fold, as they're fully integrated into a larger entity. Carnival could, though they have a huge amount of assets they'd have to burn through to get to that stage. I suppose Carnival could also scrap the brand and reassign (etc) the ships, though I don't see why they would do that at this stage, the best case scenario for them is all brands in the company slowly return to service, even if one ship at a time.

I know this is slightly off topic, therefore it will possibly be removed, but had a thought.

Could the CC members write a "reference" in support of their favourite/s PCS/PCA, sending it to the Directors of Cunard. This may assist the better quality people who my be under threat of redundancy.
