Just curious, where are you getting that they owe hundreds of billion dollars in loans? The loan they got a few months ago after the pandemic started was for $675 million.

I'm sure they are still paying off ships at 1 billion apiece

Yes sorry was off on that - they have $12.1 billion in liabilities. ($8.8 billion in debt) - point remains. That is a LOT of debt.

Shareholder benefit will be suspended for sure.

Funny when i was younger i remember the USA being Millions of $$$ in debt (and thought that was excessive) and now they throw around trillions $$$ of debt like it was nothing, i guess it's all relative.

I think you are both missing the point.  It's not that the shareholder OBC program costs them much money to administer or to give out the OBC, it's that by giving people OBC they don't RECEIVE the cash that people would otherwise spend, whether it's for an overpriced t-shirt, a shore excursion, or bingo.   The hit they take is on losing the RECEIPT of the money not being spent by the guests because they are using OBC instead.

Right now, NCL needs CASH.   Folks above are speculating that NCL might end or suspend the shareholder program because giving people OBC results in less CASH for the cruiseline.

I don't disagree with you.  In my case, honestly, my wife and I tend not to spend much on board.  I will have $350 in OBC for our March cruise, and I don't know where we will spend it, because we already have the drink package, excursion and internet promos, and prepaid gratuities.  Maybe use it for an excursion or two, but we generally don't take excursions, as we tend to prefer chilling in the ports, then heading back to ship early.  Maybe pictures, or purchases in the store, or jewelry for her.  We don't spend money in the casino, but I guess we could roll the dice and turn it into cash?  Is that possible? Regardless, NCL wouldn't be losing much more than its costs by giving us OBC.  But I know that isn't true of everyone.

We were in same boat, so to speak, on our January Panama Canal cruise on the Gem.  We had all the promos, and a bunch of OBC, including the shareholder OBC.  There really wasn't much left on which to spend the OBC.  We did take a couple of NCL excursions, so we used OBC for that.   Bought some Panama Canal t-shirts, and then used the rest of the OBC to buy some Cruise Next Certificates.   I think using them on the CN certs is a good thing if you have OBC left, rather than wasting the OBC on junk.

Forgot about that.  Great insight!  That will be our plan I'm sure.  Thanks.

We were in a similar situation on an Epic sailing last summer in the Med.  We used the OBC to upgrade our beverage pkg to the "Premium Plus".  It's unlikely that we'd ever pay for the upgrade, but with the OBC it made it worth it to us.

I've had the Carnival Shareholder deal for sometime but never the NCL one (I should have bought that $7 stock but I'm sure it will be back down there sometime this Fall) - What does NCL shareholder benefit offer?

OBC based on length of cruise.

Got it - same as Carnival lines basically. We've sailed Princess and NCL the most I should have done the NCL one when it first started but I guess I can buy some shares when they drop again just in case it stays going (I doubt it will).

Yeah. BIG difference between hundreds of billions and 8.8 billion. That figure I would believe!!!

One thing that NCL stock never offers, unlike some of the others, are dividends...

So the OBC for cruiser's, other than the possibility of growth, is the only incentive to purchase NCLH...

Carnival also offered dividends. Theirs are already cancelled if I recall. NCL's will be as well. They don't have profits to pay dividends.

NCL did not pay dividends prior to the pandemic.   (RCI and Carnival did.)  Nothing there for NCL to stop paying.

I've enjoyed the shareholder benefit for a long time. I'm Platinum Plus with NCL.

I think NCL should raise the amount to shares to qualify for the benefit.

People who own 250 shares of NCLH stock will qualify for the benefit.

For the past 3 years the stock has been trading at about $50  a share. ($5000 for a hundred shares)

Now it's trading at about $20 a share. ($5000 for two hundred fifty shares)

I have a cruise that is over 15 nights next April. On Thursday evening I emailed the brokerage statement along with the form. Today 1 $50 onboard credit and 2 $100 onboard credits were added to my booking.

What kind of logic is that? If it had been trading at $100 a share for the past three years, should it have been 50 shares then? Do you want them to continually change the benefit requirement based on the share price?

I also sent in request on Thursday, and saw today that it has been added.  I'm not sure what day it was added, as I didn't look until today.

One very simple form to fill out and one supporting doc from your broker? I wouldn't exactly call that jumping thru hoops, how else would you expect to receive the OBC?  I've found them to be a very accommodating department. I am a Platinum cruiser. The only problem i have encountered is that i am a solo cruiser and sometimes i get 50% of the OBC and that is stated in their fine print, so when i get full OBC i consider myself lucky.

It is all relative.  RCL Shareholder Benefit is done on line with no faxing or mailing.
