Weather / Humidity in the Mediterranean

Recommended Posts

I'm planning on doing a family cruise this summer and was thinking about going to the Mediterranean. We remember the first time we went to Orlando in the summer and the humidity there was brutal. It was almost unbearable to walk outside. We had to carry one of those spray bottle fan things. Overall I won't be going to Florida in the summer it is way too hot and humid there. Either way, that is why we chose the Mediterranean as our destination for our first cruise. What we didn't know is that apparently it gets humid in the summer? I thought it had the same climate type as what we have here in California. From what I've read here it seems more people complain about humidity in the western Mediterranean (Rome, Barcelona, Ibiza, Naples, French Riviera)  than the eastern Mediterranean with the exception of Venice (Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, Croatia, Montenegro). Can anyone tell me how humid the Mediterranean is in the summer? I'm limited to only the months of June, July, and August because of kids schooling.

Could be as bad as Florida, depending on location, but the more pressing issue is your ability to get there and find a place to stay

I live in Germany and have been visiting the Mediterranean at least one time per year. I also have been travelling to the US in the past years, mostly to California and Florida. The mediterranean climate is more comparable to California than to Florida. It can get up to 100 F in July and August, but as long as you are at the coast it never feels like the high humidity in Florida. I recommend visiting the Mediterranean in May, June or Sepember. July and August are very crowded due to school holidays. Unfortunately, my guess is that we won't be allowed to travel across the big pond this year in any direction.

We have never found the humidity in the Mediterranean to be nowhere near as bad as to that in Florida.

Visiting in June would be our preference as it would probably be quieter than the peak months of July and August.

However with regards to this year I’m doubtful if travel to some if not all Mediterranean countries will be allowed.

Our preference would be a Greek island cruise including one that also takes in Kotor and either Split or Dubrovnik.

In general, would you say it is comfortable in the summer?

Oh, I was hoping by summer it would be easier to travel and have a vacation.

We've all been hoping that, and have been for the past 11 months. But it looks like the end of the pandemic and the resumption of cruising will be slower than any of us would have imagined.

And we will have to abide by the timelines that other countries set for allowing foreign visitors.

Back in July, we booked a trip to Lake Tahoe for the end of June this year, and even that is looking a little iffy.  :classic_rolleyes:

Yes, I think you should be fine. Well, it all depends on what you are doing. Of course it might be exhausting when you are walking around a big city like Rome or Barcelona for a whole day with high temperatures. But for me personally, it was A LOT more exhausting walking around Walt Disney World with the high humidity of Florida.

I have holidayed in the Mediterranean for 50 years.

June,July, September and October are our preferred month's.

August is the month I would avoid because of the heat and humidity.

At the moment it seems unlikely that any Mediterranean ports will be open for US visitors as well as for us in the UK.

Graham.

We did similar cruise 4 years ago many of the same ports our cruise was middle of September and it was extremely hot, very uncomfortable walk around , Vatican was terrible no air movement and of course you couldn’t wear comfortable clothes like shorts . Our other Europe cruise was in March and weather was perfect for walking around.
