Rare Solent Richard Posted March 7, 2021 #551 Share Posted March 7, 2021 What a fabulous topic and I'm only sorry I'm a little bit late joining in - blame the fine weather for allowing me to work on my allotment. So without further ado I'll join in and commence with what proved to be an amazing cruise on Azura to the Black Sea in the Autumn of 2012. The icing on the cake was a call at the port of Yalta... So determined where we to get the most out of this unusual port that we booked a private tour guide who turned out to be amazing. Amongst the many outstanding places he took us to was the Swallow's Nest... ...and the The Livadia Palace… ...the venue for the famous WWII Yalta Conference.... Indeed, when I said the guide was amazing, I really meant it. He got us access into the Palace before opening time which meant I was able to photograph many rooms without visitors flocking over them, including the Big Three's Meeting Conference Table... Another of the places that we visited included the Massandra Palace... ...and the Church of St. Michael Archangel… The guides name was Sergey Tsarapora and boy was he impressive... A full review of that visit and all the places we saw is featured in my Cruise Blog... https://solentrichardscruiseblog.com/2013/04/23/one-way-to-do-yalta/
Son of Anarchy Posted March 7, 2021 #552 Share Posted March 7, 2021 Fantastic photos of Yalta. BTW we were on the same cruise!
Aulanis Posted March 7, 2021 #553 Share Posted March 7, 2021 @Solent Richard Nice pictures of Yalta but I think you have missed the purpose of the thread. We are on an imaginary world cruise and the ports we visit are advised each day and sometimes in the evening by @Gettingwarmer and If we have been to that port we post pictures if we can find them 🙂 Tomorrow the port is Antigua in the Caribbean.

It is very confusing reading a thread halfway through and I thank you for explaining how the the thread started. Looking forward to all the pictures tomorrow of Antigua. Izzywiz Posted March 8, 2021 #559 Share Posted March 8, 2021 It's overcast and chilly this morning so it is such a treat to see these glorious pictures of Antigua. Our best visit was on Adonia in 2016 but we weren't expecting there to be 5 huge ships docked that day plus our baby! We dashed off the ship as soon as clearance was given and managed to get an island tour at the port gate immediately before the hoards descended.... Take no notice of the time stamp. It is wrong because i forgot to reset it for Caribbean time....senior moments!
Izzywiz Posted March 8, 2021 #560 Share Posted March 8, 2021 Our driver took us straight to Shirley Heights and we were the first to arrive so it was wonderful to see the views without the crowds
Izzywiz Posted March 8, 2021 #561 Share Posted March 8, 2021 Our next stop was at Nelson's Dockyard and we were amazed to see how much development had taken place since our previous visit in 2000.

zap99 Posted March 8, 2021 #564 Share Posted March 8, 2021 (edited) We live in a Surrey Village called St Johns. Not quite the same as beautiful Antigua. We can't sit on the hotel beach sipping a rum punch whilst captain Savage who runs the watersports tells us his favourite place in the world is Sheffield. ' I love Sheffield mon'. We can't walk up to Shirley heights , or look across to Eric Claptons beautiful house, or down to English Harbour. We don't have a Nelson's dockyard to wander around " they rowed the Atlantic in that ?". Thanks to all those scientists and jabbers, perhaps this winter we can visit this beautiful Island again. Untill then, here's one wot I took earlier. Edited March 8, 2021 by zap99
Aulanis Posted March 8, 2021 #565 Share Posted March 8, 2021 (edited) Looks like it was a dull day weatherwise when we were there. No pics from 10.30 am until 5 pm??? something to do with the march? looked peacful enough - maybe I got lost on the ship looks easy to do from the last pic. Grumpycruiser60plus Posted March 8, 2021 #566 Share Posted March 8, 2021 Antigua, Jan2018, we decided to take a tour after chatting with a local guy " charlie" I stipulated we only wanted to visit Shirley Heights, see Eric Claptons villa, ( Im a huge fan) English harbour/ Nelsons dockyard. he added in the cricket ground ( Viv Richards) our trip happened to coincide with the arrival of the Talisker Atlantic challenge boat,( pic shows them being met, & later at Nelsons Dockyard being cheered on) they set a record apparently. some of these pic i have posted before on the previous picture, so apologies. will stay aboard for Tortola, need to recharge the camera batts.
Dermotsgirl Posted March 8, 2021 #567 Share Posted March 8, 2021 In 2010 we did the cricket tour on Antigua. 'Our' cricketer was Richie Richardson, but Curtly Ambrose had dropped in as well. He is very tall

Rare DamianG Posted March 8, 2021 #571 Share Posted March 8, 2021 (edited) A taxi ride to Nelson's Dockyard in the morning for us then in the afternoon we walked to the Recreation Ground where an old chancer took it upon himself to show us around hoping to earn a few dollars in tips. We were happy to oblige, I don't think I'd have been brave enough to walk out onto the field and square without him prompting me.
