Cruises Restarting for Vaccinated Only, Will You Go...?

Although I posed this "hypothetical question" initially, but looks like it's getting closer to reality:

Virgin Voyages To Require COVID-19 Vaccines When Cruises Restart

https://www.cruisecritic.com/news/5959/

Virgin is an adults-only cruise line that targets a demographic that likely is already vaccinated or at least eligible.  Big difference between that and the Big 3 who relies heavily (and increasingly) on younger passengers including kids.

Celebrity's just released their protocol for kids on the St. Maarten sailings and will  allow kids under 18 with a negative PCR test within 72 hours which is no big deal as every guest, even those vaccinated will have to have that to enter St. Maarten prior to boarding the cruise

I can maybe understand the no mask mandate, but why on earth would you care if there are distancing measures?

These first cruises won't be going out full capacity. I would imagine distancing would be fairly easy in venues such as the restaurants, theater, hallways where it takes about

1 1/2 seconds to pass someone or any gathering place. The difficult areas for social distancing will, no doubt, be the elevators.

I refuse to wear a mask on board (which is why I won't be cruising until there are no mask mandates anywhere on the ship) but I will don a mask in elevators. That is just too close quarters for me to feel comfortable.

Because distancing measures change the dynamics of the experience I pay for a cruise for.
I don’t want to be mindful of walking down the promenade, or make an appointment for my turn to sit in a lounge and have a drink. If we want to pop into the casino after dinner and play some craps, I don’t want to put my name on a list and wait until enough people come out so I can go in. (Same goes for any of the shops on board)

Social distancing eliminates the spontaneity that I enjoy on a cruise, so I will not spend my money on that experience.

Those are all valid reasons for not wanting to social distance. Hopefully, ships sailing with only 50% capacity or even less won't be too much of a problem with these scenarios.

I’ve been vaccinated-husband never will so I guess no more cruising for us! 😔

I would divorce him! Nah.....just kidding. Having said that, I feel your pain.

Maybe in the distant future, vaccinations will not be mandatory to cruise so there may still be hope for you.

This Thursday, husband and i will get our second shot and will be ready to go.  Hoping to cruise this late fall.  Time will tell.  At our age, we chose to get the vaccine, those that choose different, that is their decision, either way, lets hope cruising from the US starts soon.

Almost all reactions are normal vaccine reactions, just like I had with the Shringrix vaccine.  I've had the first dose of Pfizer and will be getting the second this Friday.  I know many people who have had the vaccine and the worst reaction was a mild headache and low grade fever.   You need to look up correlation and causation to gain some perspective.

After my second shot of the Moderna vaccine, my immune system kicked some ass. I spiked a 102.6 fever about 14 hours after the shot. I had the usual side effects of a high fever. By that night, my temp went back to normal and I was good to go after that.

If anyone thinks that is a bad side effect of getting the vaccine, then you are sadly mistaken. I have read up on this and actually, having that type of a reaction is a GOOD THING. My immune system is pretty darn robust at my age of 71 years and I'm so happy I still have the ability to fight off infection like a 20 year old. YAY for me!

No point arguing with this person.  They are only going to believe what they want to.  Facts mean nothing to them.

Agree. It is all about the conspiracy theories that drives their utter and total misguided misinformation. Sad really.

My family and I received our first Pfizer dose, and will be fully vaccinated at month's end; we are booked on Anthem for a New Years Ever cruise out of Bayonne, and if it goes, we'll be on it, even if I need to wear a space suit for everyone's protection.

That's great so you can ditch the tux.

Absolutely!  I just  booked for March 2022, we are all three already vaccinated, and looking forward to it.  I have complete faith in RC that they will do everything possible to make cruising safe for everyone again.

I can understand the mandate of vaccination for all passengers.  But the problem is vaccinating the crew,  how do they mandate the vaccine for the crew?  most of the crew members are from 3rd World countries and they won't be able to get a vaccine.  The cruise industry can't just go out and buy the vaccine and give a shot to the crew.

The cruise industry will have more than enough vaccinated passengers wanting to cruise but not enough vaccinated crew to sail.

Someone posted the following on this cruise site or another cruise site (can't recall which) that they have become friendly with one of the crew members over the years. That crew member stated he/she is heading to one of the ships soon and will be vaccinated on the ship.

So..........that tells me that the cruise lines just may be able to procure enough vaccinations for their crew. The crew member also relayed, "No vax, no job".

Hope what was relayed from this crew member is true. I hope, I hope, I hope!

My husband had a bad reaction after second Pfizer dose.  Became totally disoriented and then unresponsive.  Went to hospital by ambulance.  Is good now, but it was very scary.  Had right arm tremors too, the arm where he was vaccinated.

Was your husband's reaction directly attributed to the vaccine? Have others had this reaction too? I'm glad your hubby is OK now.

No mask?  what about one of those clear face shields?

I hate masks,  every time I go out where I have to wear a mask my beard itches like crazy.

From same link, and pretty much at the top; "

Fully vaccinated people can:

  • Visit with other fully vaccinated people indoors without wearing masks or physical distancing
  • Visit with unvaccinated people from a single household who are at low risk for severe COVID-19 disease indoors without wearing masks or physical distancing
  • Refrain from quarantine and testing following a known exposure if asymptomatic

Regarding the first bullet point:  So.....it does not say there is a limit on the amount of vaccinated people that can visit other vaccinated people. I take that to mean that a ship full of ONLY vaccinated passengers and crew can mingle without masks and social distancing.

Problem is, with un-vaccinated children on board, masks and social distancing will need to be adhered to. This is the main reason I much prefer NOT to have un-vaccinated children on a ship full of 100% vaccinated adults. I'm spoiled and do not want to wear a mask on vacation.

Whaaaaaaa. I'll have some whine with my cheese.

From your link:

my bold & Italics

For now, fully vaccinated people should continue to:

  • Take precautions in public like wearing a well-fitted mask and physical distancing
  • Wear masks, practice physical distancing, and adhere to other prevention measures when visiting with unvaccinated people who are at increased risk for severe COVID-19 disease or who have an unvaccinated household member who is at increased risk for severe COVID-19 disease
  • Wear masks, maintain physical distance, and practice other prevention measures when visiting with unvaccinated people from multiple households
  • Avoid medium- and large-sized in-person gatherings
  • Get tested if experiencing COVID-19 symptoms
  • Follow guidance issued by individual employers
  • Follow CDC and health department travel requirements and recommendations

Taking precautions in public (which is addressed in the first bulleted point) is NOT the same as being in a "bubble" of a 100% vaccinated passengers and crew cruise ship.

I personally think what is appropriate for a "bubble" cruise ship would be that fully vaccinated people can "visit with other fully vaccinated people" without masks and without having to social distance. Now......that would certainly let out kids on those "bubble" cruise ships. With kids on board, then masking and social distancing would have to be mandated for specific scenarios, mainly INDOORS.

My opinion, of course.

I did:

Medium- or large-sized gatherings

All people, regardless of vaccination status, should adhere to current guidance to avoid medium- or large-sized in-person gatherings and to follow any applicable local guidance restricting the size of gatherings. If they choose to participate, fully vaccinated people should continue to  adhere to prevention measures that reduce spread, including wearing a well-fitted mask, maintaining physical distance from others, and washing hands frequently.

What this passage says to me is that "All people" could include vaccinated or un-vaccinated people that have gathered in a large group. This is why fully vaccinated people should continue to mask and distance from others. You never know, in a large group, how many people are vaccinated and how many people aren't vaccinated. You just can't take that chance.

So ReneeFLL wants a ship with no kids.  I think they should try a different line, maybe Princess.  I think they should have ships sail with no FLL people, just kids and over 70.  Maybe a lottery to see who can sail on what ship.  Like it's the kids fault there is no vaccination for them and then what kind of vaccine will it be.  Will it change their DNA and now it might affect their children or their ability to have children.   So I guess my family will not be able to cruise because we have a 13 yo and I am 70.

Read my post and understand it before commenting. I said no kids at first. I didn’t say no unvaccinated kids forever. 🤦‍♀️  Also if you think the shots have anything to do with changing someone’s DNA then you are so far behind the learning curve that you can’t even be seen.

Not sure there is any data that school age children carry a viral load enough to infect others.

I think they should limit sailing to those under 70 until such time as I turn 70. I’d rather have unvaccinated kids than 70+.
