Being so close to the airport runway though would create an issue with ship lights close to runway lights, and that was an objection from the airport when they were planning a new wharf at Yarra Bay. Would be a cool view from the top deck. Watching planes much more interesting than a view of the cemetery. There’s a part of the freight area called Hayes dock which is already legislated for cruise ships. I did post the act a while ago. Its parallel to the runway and was a proposed for interim use but I don’t think it would be suitable for something like a Oasis class.

Hayes Dock would even fit Oasis. Some of the container ships using the dock are massive.

springaussie Posted November 30, 2022 #704 Share Posted November 30, 2022 The Container Terminal in Auckland was a flop it took passengers ages to leave the ship. Heaps of people changed there minds and stayed onboard. Emails will be flying to Royal over this one. We pulled up beside the pier 1300 and left the ship just before 1500. Buses departed with the first load of passengers after 1400. We actually pushed in with no knowledge of it by going down the right lift to level 2. The Music Hall was full of passengers waiting to go ashore in Auckland. The main problem I could see with the shuttles was going thru a working port. Heaps of trucks lined up with containers to unload. We returned to the ship at 1900 with no issues. The shuttles were dropping people opposite the Railway Station where the other cruise ships dock. An on time departure of 2000 from Auckland occurred and we on time arriving the Bay of Islands today. The 5 free drinks is working well with a few extra freebies appearing.

I hadn't heard that we are building wharves in Warragamba Dam. Or that Flannery is designing them. Sea levels have risen 8 inches since 1880 and the rise is accelerating. I don't see the sea level rise coming to a sudden stop or more intense storms going away, so I hope they keep building climate resilient wharves. Well at that rate they will need to build a wharf at Warragamba in the next couple of thousand years. Who knows, the floor of the OPT could be under water in a couple of hundred years. Rare MMDown Under Posted December 1, 2022 #709 Share Posted December 1, 2022 I enquired at the Gold Coast City Council why my shack is zoned 1 in a 100 year flood risk, when it has never flooded. She replied the whole of the Gold Coast is a flood plain. With so much developement, when torrential rain meets king tides there is no-where for the water to go. I suspect a lot of Coastal Qld./NSW is in the same situation.

My friends on that cruise aren’t very happy, they said all the shore excursions booked through the ship have been canceled. They went and booked something privately in Napier now it has been canceled. They had a $1,000 OBC and it disappeared, after calling their agent. Royal said the lift and shift wasn’t done in time and OBC was with drawn. But they still took the booking. Guest services will be busy. That last cruise was just a debacle,we were at anchor in Vila for 2 days. fairywren Posted December 1, 2022 #718 Share Posted December 1, 2022 I’m on Ovation at the moment. We got stuck in Tauranga due to high winds, couldn’t leave on time as the port was closed, eventually left at 3am. So we are now heading straight to Picton. A pity to miss Napier but safety comes first. We are having a great cruise.

Someone I was talking about a shore excursion they did in Noumea,it was French wine and cheese experience. For $190 U.S they got a bit of a tour of Noumea ,one glass of wine and 2 pieces of cheese smaller than a credit card.

The tour is pretty much the Tchou Tchou train route. Much cheaper to go to the Casino for some camembert, a baguette and a bottle of French plonk, then book the train from the cruise terminal market.
