We are hoping to be in Antigua in January and looking for the best calm, uncrowded beach with a great bar/restaurant.

If you wish a totally "T'erd free" experience with a Beach, then your list for considereration  is:

Jacqui O's

Cecilia's

Catherine's Café

Without a Beach then "Sheer Rocks"

All at various price points - Book your Lunch/Day in advance for all.

For a luxury all inclusive option, then Curtain Bluff is the best, but do contact them in advance to discover if they have spare capacity.  Also, take a tour of the accommodation, for future  booking consideration.

For a lower price point, with just an occasional Herd experience, then consider Rum Bus (Probably with a vibe more suited to a teens or younger adults).  But Towles are now starting to discover it, being a new "Status" ego trip, considered to be more upmarket than their usual cheapo haunts, in addition a local public transport bus can be utilised.

Again, book Rum Bus in advance for Cabanas and your day.

Thank you Port Royal.  We loved Jacqui O's last time but checked and they are not open.  Thought about Rum Bus but say some excursions going there.  Wasnt sure about the other 2--do you know anything about Darkwood Beach Bar?

Yes, it’s on the way to JOs on the right just before the hill.  The road is close and one can hear the traffic (especially trucks) going over the hill.  An okay place, with bar, facilities etc.  However it is popular with the cruise (cheapest please) fraternity.

Personally, would pass and go with Cecelia’s then Catherine’s, but do like the Rocks (who own Catherine’s) for the quirkiness, excellent light lunch of M standard and super cocktails.

will these places take cruisers for the day?

I just want to relax

thanks!

All will take cruisers for the day, just book your lunch and stay in advance.
You’ll be pleased to note they are upscale restaurants having beach furniture, facilities etc for use by patrons, not rent beds and umbrella for the day.places, such as Darkwood and the like.

Curious what towle or “T’erd free” means?
Love these suggestions! We’ve stayed on Antigua for two weeks a few times and it’s our favorite island.

T'erds is a word constructed by my Bajan friends, being a combination of two words

Towels and Herds.  The T from Towels and 'erds from Herds to describe some tourists.

TOWELS:

Arrive by the cheapest means; deliberately take the most annoying spot on the beach to spoil a view of paying clients on beds/loungers; spread the ship's Towels to reserve their space; constantly repeat the mantra "beaches are free" like a demented parrot; do not spend anything at the resort; bring food and drink browsed from the ship's buffet, all wrapped in a ship's napkin; bury their picnic debris in the sand; use the sea, beach and all the venue's facilities for free; if there is charge for toilets, decline and use the sea; return to the ship by the cheapest means.

Then when back in the Ship boast they spent the day at Carambola (Kim Sha et al) taking lunch and drinks there.

HERDS:

Arrive loudly en masse; stay loudly; have shouting conversations on their mobiles, or with other herd members, albeit 2 feet or 20 yards way; bring coolers full of Supermarket bought beer and food, then demand ice for free; bring boom boxes and play on highest volume; sometimes pay for beds but insist a colony of friends is created; complain about the price of venue's food as the reason for buying a single slice of pizza.

Seek to use Hotel or Beach facilities for free, failing that, turn the sea into a Urinal (aka going for a swim)

Abuse or ridicule other guests, and members of the venue's staff, solely for the group's amusement.

Basically, it's a group who knowingly do everything possible to spoil the genteel ambience of the venue, and to annoy as many people as it is physically possible.

Then leave loudly en masse.

Other items of annoyance can be added to each of the above definitions as required.

Ah, yes.  Long before we went on our first cruise, despising all things cruise ship, we called them Towel People. We were in Antigua over 30 years ago, standing on a dock, watching a cruise ship pull away, streamers flying and limbo music blaring. The scourge was gone. But the litter they left all over Runaway Bay beach was still very much there. A perfectly good beach day, ruined. We equated cruise ships with a destruction of the Caribbean. And still do I suppose. We have learned to ask and not book land vacations where cruise ship day trippers are welcome.

We and friends, have also made venue mistakes in the past.  Now we frequent the nicer places on the Islands, where T’erds will never go because of the price point, entrance declined, then if having sneaked in, or downgrading the ambiance, invited to leave, by some seriously built security personal.

Having to book in advance one’s lunch and day appears to be a major deterrent.

@PORT ROYAL - You seem to be very knowledgeable about Antigua. We are vegans so most restaurants are not worth trying but we'd like an upscale beach and don't mind paying for drinks (or lunch if they actually had something we could eat). Also, our experience with Antigua is most beaches have drop-offs just as you enter the water - is that the case with the ones you've recommended above?

Without any doubt the best aware Vegan Restaurant is Cecilia’s as they can prepare a wonderful lunch with one’s favourite ingredients (locally sourced).  When booking exchange one.’s requirements and leave the rest to Cecilia. There’ll be no disappointment.

The High Point Beach is usually gentle, but can have a drop because of a hurricane or a large storm, but this is naturally repaired over time.
Don’t let a beach drop, albeit gentle or slight or not, be a deal breaker as Cecilia’s has so much more to offer, such as a beautiful shabby chic restaurant, great food, simple and discreet service, sea views, excellent food, relaxed ambience, wine, beer cocktails etc….

Oh, not forgetting the discerning and genteel clientele that frequent this type of establishment.

Know you’ll make memories there and who knows one may meet new friends for life.

Thinking about one’s request and thought about the suspicion regarding the food, which may not be to one’s requirements.  Plus also being adverse to a beach with a drop.
So give Sheer Rocks Day Pass Pool option, which has no beach, but will give one the opportunity to view (in situ) all offerings.  The food is actually very good.
