Solo on Viking Star

Hi there - I’m thinking of 11 night panama cruise on Viking Star as a solo.  Anyone go solo on Viking Ocean cruises?   How are they for the solo traveler?

Hi, I have never sailed with them but I will suggest you post this question on the Viking forum. Maybe some folks on there will have some first hand knowledge about solo guests.

I have done one solo cruise on Viking (well, it was a partial cruise since it was when Covid hit and we only sailed halfway across the Atlantic before coming back!)  I had another scheduled for last month, to Hawaii, but since Hawaii was not allowing cruise ships in they changed the itinerary to Mexico and allowed those who did not want to sail on the new itinerary to cancel for a full refund--so I canceled.

 

I really enjoyed sailing with them.  They fit my style of cruising--no kids, no casinos, no glitz, just excellent food, interesting itineraries, relaxed atmosphere, pricing is pretty inclusive,  a new and very well-maintained and cleaned fleet...and lots of other things I like.

 

The only problem, which I think was also mentioned on the thread on the Viking forum, is that it is VERY rare to be able to get a solo supplement less than 100%.  I watch like a hawk for everything they send via email, and look most days at pricing online, just so I don't miss when they offer a reduced supplement.  Hopefully some day I will find another offer of a lower supplement and will be able to sail with them again!  🙂

I was scheduled to go with them to Bermuda as a solo but had to cancel due to my passport not returned in time. On that roll call several solo travelers had posted  I may try them again this summer to use up FCC

I did a solo trip on Viking for a transatlantic at the end of 2019.  Got a reasonable price as it had minimal port stops, and in the end the weather drove our route way to the south to miss some REALLY bad weather, so our earlier port stop changed and our later port stop (supposed to be in BDA for Christmas Eve) was cancelled.  I can't say enough good things about the ship (beautiful), the service (wonderful) and the food (amazing), however there was no social activities or arrangements for solo travelers.  I was fine with that - but just go into it with the idea that you may well spend the cruise by yourself.  BTW I've also done a Viking river and I met a great group of people, made up of couples and solos, on the first night and spent the rest of the cruise with wonderful company ... I'm still friends with some of them 6 years later!  If you're looking for a good price for a solo on Viking Ocean, watch for the reposition sailings - the fewer ports there are, the better the price!

I am doing a solo trip with Viking next year (Alaska & Inside Passage), and am looking forward to it! It will be my fifth solo cruise, but my first with Viking. I say go ahead and do it! We only live once, and there's a great big world out there to explore!
