Icy Point Straight Excursion Cancelled :( Advice needed!

We had a Icy Point wildlife hike booked through the cruise that was just cancelled and no other wildlife hike available. Is it possible to set out on our own (by foot) from the terminal and see some sights? What is offered through the cruise line is very limited (whale watching and zipline). It has been hard to find info as all tours say "book through your cruiseline" 😞

Google Maps

Google Map for reference - zoom in-out for more less detail

Pier is in upper left corner -

The hike into Hoonah is about a mile and half

The snakey line at the right is the Zip Line Road -

You could easily walk into Hoonah -

Average walk speed of an individual (YMMV) is 3 mph -

Judge the port/shore time available to see how far you want to venture -

There are trails near the port. The best option there is whale watching. We used Glacier Winds charters and have them booked again in May. Small 6 & 13 passenger boats with bathrooms onboard, snacks, local family owned company.

While there is a nature walk trail in the ISP compound I wouldn't describe it as a wildlife hike.  And the forest is very dense so it isn't a good idea just to walk through the woods.  But the paved path along the shoreline (and along the roadway) into Hoonah has lovely views.  We've seen whales and eagles along this pathway.

But ISP is a prime whale watching area.  Would you consider a whale watching tour?

Glacier Wind is the best --- love them.
