Akureyri shore excursion?

Before starting our cruise from Reykjavik this summer we will visit the the Blue Lagoon upon arrival in Iceland then stop at Geysir during a Golden Circle tour the next day.   So wonder if we will be wrong to NOT take a shore ex. from Akureyri that would include thermal fields and Myvatn Baths and instead opt for an excursion that includes Godafoss waterfall, botanical gardens and the town itself.  This is our first trip to Iceland, and most likely only trip there, so hope to get the most Icelandic "flavors" possible in such a short time.

Thoughts?

No need to limit yourself. Saga Tours took us on a fabulous all day tour from Akureyri to the Thermal fields, Lake Myatn, Godafoss, the black rocks of Dimmuborgum, and even a swim at the Nature Baths. Got us back to the ship in plenty of time too.  Check out their website.

Hi Lynncarol......did they pick you up at the port?  their site doesn't mention port pick up.  Thanks

See the shore excursions page

https://sagatravel.is/category/tours/shore-excursions/

which says this:

Where / how will we meet at the dock?

Our guides will pick you up at the dock just as you leave your ship. They will hold a Saga Travel sign with the tours name.

Akureyri town is cute and can be covered in 20 minutes.  21 if the traffic light is red (do check out the traffic light!)

I agree with @lynncarol.  When in Iceland do as many natural wonders as possible.

Yes, we were picked up at the port.  Actually, we (2 couples) had originally booked with Traveling Viking who never showed up.  After half an hour my husband then approached a Saga Tour driver at the port who was outside his van checking in folks and asked if they had any extra room.  Turned out that Traveling Viking had transferred us to Saga without ever informing any of us. (When I finally was able to contact Traveling Viking post cruise, they confessed that a 'schedule conflict' had occurred...they were picking up a bigger group at a hotel...and there was no room for us. Claimed they had no way of letting us know...ridiculous as we all had cell phones). The Saga driver was waiting for us and with a total of only 8 guests in the van, gave us an excellent tour.

Great information.  We have booked with this company tours in June.  Looking forward to it.

We did a very similar tour with another company, and I highly recommend doing something like this out of Akureyri.  It was a fabulous day.

As for Akureyri itself... not much to see.  You visit Iceland to see as much of its natural beauty as possible.

Much of what there is to see in Iceland is in nature, with approaches that are not paved, though some are. There have been companies mentioned on the TripAdvisor forum that specialize in patrons with mobility issues.  You might want to ask over there. You might be able to supplement ship excursions with ones more suited to your husband.
